EUREKA, Calif. -- A group of Humboldt County residents is attempting to amass more political sway by forming a new city in the heart of California's famed hub of marijuana cultivation.

The project, dubbed Emerald City, is in its earliest stages, with supporters seeking to raise $7,500 to fund a financial feasibility study - the first step in the city incorporation process.

The city would incorporate Garberville and Redway, both located about 50 miles south of Eureka and home to about 1,000 residents each.

Jim Lamport, the project's main proponent, tells the Santa Rosa Press Democrat that Emerald City would help the area receive its fair share of county services. He says the city could generate revenue by taxing marijuana.

But some residents and local officials question whether the plan makes fiscal sense for the county and the surrounding community.

Interesting.. I wonder what the Bed and Breakfasts will be like? If they have French maids I'll be more the thrilled.

wow. That's incredible, borderline revolutionary. A city officially controlled by growers. I love it! Sign me up!

If successful, I will seriously consider moving there.

This would be awesome but an ordinance they would need to be really successful is to plot out small sections of land in order to attract the biggest population possible. Plot out maybe half an acre of lend or less. Income off of property tax as well as marijuana cultivation taxes or require permits to cultivate and just charge a small fee (much easier this way and cheaper for both parties). I'm already in the works for moving to Emerald triangle, and I will gladly be a resident of this city. Shit, I'd even consider running for office :)
