Can you use a vertical HPS bulb horizontally?

I got an HPS security light and the bulb is mounted vertically. I've heard its bad for the bulb to use it horizontally.

It also says on the box something to this effect so I'm pretty sure it must be true.

What is your guys' input?

wow... you finally sprung for a hps, i geuss my constant cfl bashing has finally opened someones eyes...
its all about your reflector...the easiest way to convert a security light is horizontally but you can also do it vertically... in my experiences i perfer horizontal... you get much more even lighting on your grow area...

Yeah I know about vertical growing..

I'm already 7 weeks in to flowering and am just adding this light to my CFLs by hanging it above the plant. It's provide more light if it was mounted horizontally though..

Maybe in the end it wont matter because the room is small and entirely covered with mylar

Yeah it's a tiny 70w HPS I picked up for $30. Still keeping my 250w of CFLs on it too..

So my question was are there bulbs DESIGNED to only work vertically or horizontally? It says on the box to not mount horizontally

you can see the difference in this pic... the plant on the left is vertical.. see how small the light coverage is... the one on the right is vertical... much better coverage

if you are intrested i can take some pics tomorow of my security light setup... i made it a remote ballast grow light... you will have heat problems if you leave it in the housing... there is a method in grow faq, but it involves spending way too much money for me so i make some changes and all you need is an extention cord

prim, just throwing it out there but what if you cut that reflecter in half, giving your other plant the added intensity of another light?

I already disassembled the whole thing, mounted the internals on some plywood, re-wired and soldered some longer wiring to the socket and hvae an external ballast with about 15ft of wire to the socket :)

I just did some quick reading on google and it seems it's ok to run them in any position. I'm going to find a way to mount it horizontally and make a reflector.

I think my girl is gonna laike this for the last 3 weeks of flowering. Look in my jounral to see what the buds look like with just CFLs
