Can I use 2 inline fans with 1 fan speed controller?

I just got a fan speed controller to help quiet one of my fans and just out of curiosity I tried plugging both fans in. It seemed effective, But I was wondering if it would be unsafe or cause damage to the equipment to have it hooked up like this?

look at the fan speed controller packaging. it should say the rated voltage it can handle. being that they are pc fans and only 12 volts and very low amperage, id say your fine. if you dont find the rated voltage within limits, leave it run as is with both, check it every 10 minutes for a few hours while your home. make sure the cords arent hot and the fans arent hot.. ive wired a few jerry rigs i my time, in my honest opinion i think you are fine with both.

Thanks for a quick reply Mr. Nice. The fans I am using are actually a 6" 350 CFM and 4" 170 CFM vortex style fans 110 volts each and the fan speed controller is rated for 120V/15A So I guess the fans might be a bit too much.

but remember they are not working at full power. do you have the wires spliced together and directly connected to the controller? a picture would make it easy to tell. if they are wired in parallel they share a common voltage and would not be a problem

yes, i plugged the one from htg supply into two, a 6 and 8 in fan. worked fine. i beleive i used a power strip.

The HTG controller is the one I am using. 2 fans plugged into a power strip and the strip plugged into the controller. Thanks for the great responses I'll see how it goes.
