A good friend's older brother had decided to give me some cuttings from his San Pedro garden. They are all fresh and at least 12".

Anyone have experience with ideal soil mediums and rooting practices/techniques? I have found some information online and am just seeing what else I might be overlooking from someone whose been there.

Thanks :)

dry cuttings for at least four weeks. you want a solid waxy callous, BEFORE you attempt to root. use DRY sand, non compacted, and pull every week to check for root buds. once buds start poking out of the callous, water sparingly, then pull one week later. if water roots have started to grow, replant, rewater, then water every two weeks until the end of summer. ABSOLUTELY NO NITROGEN!!!!!!! shouldn't need any fertilizer at all, actually....

That's what I've been reading. You suggest straight sand as opposed to a mixed cactus medium?

DRY sand too, partial sunlight until you have root buds. that can take one week or six months, but i've had cuts survive in the closet for four years, don't worry about it. they take their time sometimes. wait till you try to root lophophora williamsii or trichocereus bridgesii....

I took about 75 cuttings from my paddle cactus this January. Let them sit out in the sun for 2/3 weeks. Then planted them about 2/3 inches were the cutting was. The cuttings were between 12inches to 2 feet. 74 are growing on my hillside today .

almost all opuntias love water, are frost hardy, and don't have to sit for more than a few days after cutting. hell, most opuntias can be cut and planted without drying first and will root as long as it's above 75f. what zone are you in?

Sand is good eh? I haven't tried straight sand. What about something like cascade minerals? It's crushed basalt rock in varying particle sizes. Gravel ish sand, but full of minerals.
