Bud growth rate differs on plant -- how to handle?

I figure there's gotta be a week's difference in maturity between the main cola and the buds growing on secondary growths. How do you guys handle this at harvest? I'm afraid optimum harvest of the main cola may get me immature secondary buds, whereas waiting for the secondary buds may push the harvest of the main cola past where I want it to be. I'll be gauging harvest based on the overall color of the trichs.

I was planning on cutting the main stalks low and hanging for drying (as opposed to clipping buds off the plant individually). How do you veteran guys handle this typically?

Yeah, it would be nice if all the buds on a plant ripened at the same time.Outdoors they usually do.I like to harvest everything and then sit down for a 6 hour manicure session when I can. But if there is a significant variation between the top colas and side colas, just do it in sections.Just don't let that main cola get stale.

well thats the question..some believe that you should chop up the plant an harvest at different times, while i belive that you can harvest all at once an use the side colas for hash makin..

As I said, usually outdoors the whole plant matures at pretty much the same time- the lower colas will be smaller than the top due to genetics and the way the plant stretches at the beginning of flower.Indoors, the top cola is usually ready much earlier than the side shoots simply because it is closer to the light. Therefore many indoor growers will chop the top and then lower the light to help the lower budsites ripen up for another week give or take a couple of days.Unless it's a large and/or commercial grow in which case they usually always harvest everything at once regardless.

Where would be a good place to cut the plant in order to harvest the main cola and still allow effective growth of the side shoots?

Cool, that's what I figured the advice would be there -- thanks for the drawing.

My only problem is this goes against what I understood the "correct" way to harvest and dry the plant to be, which is cutting the main stalk as low as possible and hanging the whole plant to dry.

So now I'm not sure what to do... :)
