Your 1000w light is good.

Watch the heat, and you'll be ok.

.

Earl is of course correct. I use two fans (one to exhaust just the air-cooled light reflector) and a separate one for exhausting the room.

I have put labels on things and will try to describe what is happening.

The fan is sucking the air from the grow room through the carbon filter past the lights through the duct work and out the exhaust.
The carbon filter prevents unwanted odors from being exhausted outside. The air moving past the lights helps cool them and the duct work ensures no stale and stinky air escapes.
The fan has been sucking all the air at this point but from now on it blows out to the exhaust. The space under the door would provide enough of a fresh air intake though it would not be light leak proof.

Does this answer your question?

it is highly recommended. especially if you are using HID lights. in fact, i like to have a two fans - one for exhausting just the light and one for exhausting the room.

can you grow without all this? yes.

because using "all this" improves the health of the plant which is reflected in the quality and yield of the bud.

can you survive on big macs? yes. will you be healthy? no.

why wouldn't smell and temp be a problem?

YaK

just some guy

ha! love the analogy. Have you not seen 'Fast Food Nation' though?

big macs will eventually kill you.:spew:

Smell might not be a problem.
Temps will be a problem using just about any lighting system.
And don't forget about humidity, a Vent fan will help keep that down too.

But more important that, your plants need air.

So you will need.

Extraction Fan (Some where near the top of the room). You will probably need some Duct for this.
Ocilating Fan (Desk Fan) to move air around in the room.
A place for fresh air to get in.

If you are using a high power HPS light, a air cooled reflector will allow you much better control over temps. but is not nessacry.
