Brown stems, help.

The stems of my 8 day old plants all turned brown, is this normal? Also how do you tell how much water is in the soil, is there something i buy for that?

I really can't help on the stem's, but you could get a moisture meter like this one to help you out with the watering

Brown Stem Rot, Plant Disease Central
