In the late 80s/90s we used to get mexican "Wahaki" or "wahakin spears" It was golden brown, gewey, yummy, seedless and cheap.

I very well remember the taste of the weed from the 70's; it was really great. My all time favorite was Columbian; it just tasted soooooooo good, smelled sooooooooo good and the stone was always amazing. I only had Acapulco Gold once and only a single joint at that. It was goldish color and I only got 2 hits (shared the J with 5 friends) so I don't recall what the flavor was like but the stone was unreal, very trippy. The golden color is caused by the way they strip some of the bark off the bottom of the stalk and leave it to die naturally; there is a term for it that I can't remember. Man I would kill for another bag of Colombian pot.

Some of the yellow color of the old 1970s "gold" strains is supposed to be from "girdling" the plant. That means punching a nail through the base of the stem, and/or stripping off the bark near the base to weaken the plant.
Some of is undoubtedly because of how the stuff was cured in the sun.

I wonder if you mean "Michoacan spears". Lots of the mid-grade Mexican "schwagg" was (and undoubtedly still is) grown there. I kind of suspect that's what I just grew (see my sig).

This article by DJ Short is great reading:

Michoacan Brown Spears

From the high valleys of Michoacan, this strain was very similar in shape and texture to the Guerrero, but dark brown, and with a more peppery, spicy, woody aroma. $40 to $60 bought a seeded ounce in 1975. Although it was somewhat more bland tasting than the Guerrero , this semi-commercial pot was by far better than the commercial Mexican that was all too available. It had a more distinct, spicy flavor than the regular Mexican, as well as a brighter high that was not as susceptible to tolerance or burnout.

The plants from the Michoacan Spears were nothing great. They were thick and bushy and matured earlier than the Colombians. Some were ready in late October, but most were ready in early November. The seeds were medium grey and plentiful. Like the Guerrero, they produced some unique spicy flavors when grown outdoors in the Pacific Northwest.

Yeah thats gotta be it.Only thing is though it was always pretty decent stuff.Towards tht top of the line schwagg,LOL

I always hated the Mexican junk; it burned your throat; was very harsh, not pleasant at all. Don't know if it's true but my cuz told me they poured a Coke over it when they bricked it up to keep it solid.
