Hey Everybody, This is my first post here and I'd kinda like to give everyone a preveiw of what I plan on doing over the next few years. I am starting a breeding program and I am going all out, I have ordered seeds from 4 different suppliers and am spending everything I own on a Gas Chromatograph so I can test the potency of every strain I breed. I'm not going to say all the genetics I'm working with here, but I am using only the best and brightest here, and have a few ideas on what I'm going to do here. I have some super showy strains like Blue Dream and Flo that just dont have the smell and have some strains that have the smell and not the high like Jack Herer and AK47. I also have some strains that have huge market appeal like Girl Scout Cookies and White Flame, and I have a few secret weapons in the arsenal for potency (we're talking high twenties as far as % THC) and yeild. I want the look, the smell, the noteriety, the yeild, and the potency, and if I'm lucky I'll be able to cram it all into 9-10 weeks. Obviously this is what everyone wants to do, but I really think I'm going to approach this the right way. I have done my homework and I know my weed as well as any expert, I am even in the pre-stages of writing a book about my techniques. I hope to keep you all posted, but this is going to be an extremely long process, but if you follow my posts and I can force myself to keep posting stuff on the internet I promise you I'll make you drool. I cant wait to post photos as the lab gets set up over the next few months. Who knows maybe one day you'll be able to order seeds of the strain I'm developing now... I hope for your sake it works out that way because these are going to be some of the best strains out there, and its gonna be no fun keeping tham all to myself.

Nice first post and a tall order on top of that good luck. Just don't get bummed when things go south.
And I would of thought peeps would pick potency overall as long as it doesn't smell or taste like poo. Some of the most trippy potent weed Ive tried had bad bag appeal smelled like oregano or a weird spice and wasn't frosty at all but nugs were small and tight. The high was incredible and will never forget it.... diff level type like your first hit of Oil. Was supposedly trainwreck about 6yrs ago but came from many states away so who knows.

You'd think potency would be most important, but in my experiance smell sells, it might barely get you high but if it stinks like a skunk it flys off the shelf, people then seem to care about the appearance and what it's called and if it is in any rap songs or something, after they worry about all that they then care about the potency. One thing I can say after nonstop smoking weed all day everyday for years is that some strains only get you high the first few times you smoke them. Ak-47, jack herer and flo are all like this. Now blue dream (possible blue dragon, sold to me as blue dragon, smells like blue dream) on the other hand, I have had that strain around for 5 years and it still reliably gets me higher than almost anything. My bd is so frost with amber crystals it looks like it was rolled in sand and you it is the hardest weed to develop a tolerance to. My ak47 still outsells the bd even though the bd is much stronger because it smells so pungent. People like the smell, personally I don't need it, a lot of people think the smell on bd is to faint, but I'll take it over ak47 any day.

If you wanted to buy a used one set up for medical marijuana its about $12,000, that would be an SRI 8610c with TID, thse are nice becuase they use air as a carrier gas and dont require compressed gas cylindars. I cannot afford that at this point so I am putting one together from older parts and detectors that will work, but will require a tank of labratory grade Hydrogen, Nitrogen and Zero Air to operate the Flame Ionization Detector (FID). It will also have to hook up to an old school integrator that prints off a paper chart on that paper that is connected together and has those perforated feeder strips with the holes on both sides. (that paper is so old it's expensive these days) It isn't as simple as put your bud in the machine and it give you a numeric readout of %THC cannabinoids and whatever, but you must dissolve an exact milligram amount of the bud in solvent, run a few microlitres (must be very precise with EVERYTHING) through the machine and it will show you a chromatogram that you have to compare against an external reference standard of known THC concentration. It is a pretty complicated but isnt rocket science, just regular science. I have taught myself almost everything I need to know to do this for myself from reading books on gas chromatography at the local state university library and from the gas chromatograph manuals, and procedures online and have even had the pleasure of having a THC testing lab in colorado call me so I she could answer any questions I had that I couldnt figure out on my own. I am trying to get this together using ancient but equally accurate instruments for under $5,000.
It is something that really interests me so I have the drive to do it, if science isn't your thing your gonna want to blow your brains out and I dont reccomend getting one.
On another note I know for a fact noteriety is more important than people want to admit, and I think the name can give it some what of a placebo effect. If I told you I had this premium indoor called "Fartin Martin" and it's genetic line was "Brown Frown x Mexican Ditch" weed but it some how beat the odds and came out completely chronic I'd have a way harder time selling that some premature seeded outdoor Some Girls Scout Cookies right now just becuase the Name is in a rap song or whatever. Grand Daddy Purple was the same way a few years ago, even though personally I dont think GDP is anything great potency wise, but its beautiful to look at, dense as rock and good flavor. I think GDPs real claim to fame was noteriety given to it in rap songs, everyone wanted to smoke what the rappers were smoking, whether they wanted to admit it or not. Granted it must have been halway decent if the rappers are smoking it, but how many of these guys are actually growing it? Do they know anything about where it came from or what it was like while it was like preharvest. For all they knew the stuff could have taken 14 weeks to grow, have hermie tendancies and could have been finicky the whole time. Or the genetics might not have even been that good, but was just grown by a really good grower and cured just right, snoop dogg gets a hit of some of this batch and says its "the shizzle" and suddenly its all the rage. I know that noteriety sells on my end, because the ones with the famous names get paid back to me much quicker than the unknown ones. Its like advertising, we really dont want to admit those annoying commercials affect us, yet companies wouldnt spend billions on them every year if they didnt have an effect.

also I should have put days to harvest on the poll becuase I know that is an extremely important factor, I dont know if I can edit itbut just count that under "other"

I agree that honesty is important here ... but i could not find it as a poll option. Yay for honest weed! cn

<edit> seriously for a second ... the most important factor to me, type of high, isn't represented. I care for a more sativa smoke and am tired of Indicas and mostly-Indicas.

Fuck yeah, sativa is the best! The blue dream I have (or blue dragon i am unsure just said Blue D, originally guy said blue dragon but smells a lot like other blue dream I have seen at clubs) is the most sativa strain I have come across, with toothpick skinny leaves and quadrupling in height when flowering (on day 0 I have to cut them all down to nubs so they dont end up 10 ft tall) Anyways it is by far the best high, longest lasting, potent as hell without feeling lazy, and never build a tolerance high ever, and I hope for many of these traits to be what I i want expressed in what I end up breeding.

Also going back to noteriety. A name is important, I wanted to call my "blue dream" "blue dragon" for a long time, because thats what it was sold to me as plus I thought it sounded cooler. The dispensaries started just selling it as Blue Dream anyways becuase when they called it Blue dragon nobody knew what it was and nobody even asked to look at it. It was still hands down the dankest stuff there, but didnt sell until they rebranded it to a name people were more familiar with.
Anyways what does Romeo say about the importance of a name? and How a rose by any other name would still smell as sweet? Well looks like a name was more important than he thought because, a rose by any other name would still have been alive at the end of the play...

+1 for sativa-like, awake high with less tolerance.
Even if it's less potent (down to about half), I'll take that stuff in preference to strong couchlock weed.

You sound confident, maybe too confident. I wish you luck though and hope to see (maybe even try ;p) some beastly strains from you.

i've bought a lot of seeds over the years. every one was picked for the high. when i'm growing a genetic i know will yeild low, i make sure to grow some of my heavier yeilders with it. i'm currently flowering some cinderella 88 clones that gives me about 17 grams per plant. i hate that yeild but the high is so nice i can't stop growing it. :)

did you buy seeds from the original breeder or from knock off artists who make F2s and sell them for ridiculous amounts of money?

Considering his "blue dream" is really "blue dragon" that he thinks is like "blue dream", I think the question might already be answered.
