Breeding. An idea I have, right or wrong?

I have a Sativa male of unknown variety. I originally got it as a supposed female clone. It managed to pollinate some of other plants before I realized it was a male. I planted some of the seeds I got and well I have yet to flower them.

The idea I have is to gather pollen from the male I still have of this Sativa and pollinate some of the offspring. Plant those seeds, pollinate again and so forth. The idea is so try and breed back this sativa to as close as I can to the original. Will this work? How much of the original will remain in the new plants after several generations? Perhaps that is dependent on more information than I can provide.

Reason being overall is that I smoked some of the bud from the guy who gave me the clone. I loved it and want more of it. Sadly this guy has left town so no chance of getting another clone from him. But I do have this one remaining male that I cloned from the original before I flowered it.

Anyway, I know there is more to breeding than I am aware of, but I am still researching and learning.
