Breaking apart starter cubes as medium?

I have some gro|dan starter cubes and nothing else...would i be able to break apart 1 or 2 of the cubes to surround my rooted clone?

It would probably be easier the just put cubes all around it so it's like a big block. Of course you will need something to hold it together until the roots grow all through it. You could tear the cubes up but it will probably be a pain in the ass and be careful not to smash the material to much.
