i've been a toker for about 6 years and, until i found out about this site while chattin w/ my stepdad (SD), i was completely ignorant when it came to strains and varieties. SD, who's been growin and breeding (personal use only) for 30+ years, gave me some seeds, a little advice ("Go to rollitup. That place has awesome info."), and told me to start my own garden. so, 3.5 weeks ago I germ'd some of the seeds he gave me and am growing 2 plants. i'm hoping that they're both female but if 1 turns out to be male i might do a little cross-breeding experiment.
first, the breeds--
i am an amateur and probably shouldn't be growing these "advanced" plants, but, hey, why not. you learn from your mistakes, right?

Wandering Jane (WJ)

WJ was genetically engineered by one of SD's friends who, besides being a stoner, is a horticulturalist at a UGA extension office. it was designed specifically for the stealthy home grower. it is a sativa plant w/ the growing characteristics of a ruderalis plant. it grows and matures more quickly (6-8 weeks) than a standard sativa. maximum height is 3 - 3.5 feet tall at maturity, but it is the perfect plant for LST. it smells of citrus with a very slight hint of skunkiness. i haven't smoked any of this yet, but i'm told by SD that the high is a sativa/afghani blend. my mouth is watering just tellin you guys about it.

UB is your basic afghani/indica hybrid that SD created. nothin really special bout this other than when smoked it will put you on your ass. after smoking this you think you're speaking clearly, but actually you sound like a caveman. Hence, the name.
My Grow Space--
i live in a apartment and am using a closet (4X3X5') in the guest room as my grow space. because this is my first grow (and the fact that i am broke) SD suggested that i start out with a couple of shop lights and supplement with CFL's for flowering. i'm using 2 48in T8 shop lights with a total of 4 bulbs that puts out about 9600 lumens. for vegging i have 3 bright white bulbs and 1 warm white bulb. i will reverse the type of bulbs for flowering and supplement with 3 (or more if needed) 43w warm white CFL's. the lights are currently on 24/7. i know, everyone says 18/6 but SD suggested 24 because of my lighting. the plants seem to love it. the lights are about 3-4 inches above and to the backside of the plants. the wall on the front side of the plants is lined with an emergency blanket that i bought for $1 at target when i couldn't find Mylar. i have a small fan for ventilation and also 2 small hamilton-beach trueair carbon filters (also bought at target) which help tremendously with UB's intoxicating odor. I cant wait to smell her (fingers crossed) when she begins to flower.
i'm having a slight problem with WJ. the edges of a few of the leaves started turning brown. i posted a thread and discovered (thanks to cloudflyer) that my fert is too strong even though i only mixed it at 1/4 strength. it's weird because i gave both of the plants the same amount and UB is doing wonderfully.
both plants sprouted about 2.5 weeks ago. WJ has been vegging for the past 9 days or so and UB about 5-6 days. i'm doing LST with both of them. i'm planning to give them 2.5-3 more weeks of 24/7 veg time before i flower. they should both take about the same time to mature but SD told me to watch WJ closely because this particular breed can go into flowering without switching to 12/12.
