Blasting BHO into a NoGoo Silicone "Pyrex" Dish

Hey guys,
I just grabbed myself a small 7 gram tube, some 14x vector butane, and have been blasting into
a pyrex dish that is floating in a hot water bath.

This has been working out pretty well and I am happy with the results, but my question is can
I replace the pyrex dish with a NoGoo silicone "pyrex dish-sized" tray? My concern is that the
butane will for some reason not evaporate off the silicone as well as the pyrex but that really
does not make any sense... I am basically just skipping a step by cutting out the pyrex and
blasting the BHO into the silicone container and purging it in there as well.

Hope this makes sense!

Don't let silicone come into contact with any solvents we use..the purged hash oil isn't much better

I won't use silicone and would prefer not to smoke the product

The "Oil Slick" pad has special silicone that won't break down in the presence of butane. I use a common silicone cupcake baking pan from a hobby/fabric store cut up into separate sections for everything else including storing BHO and washing/rinsing/drying with IPA.

I won't let silicone touch my extracts... it leaches. For sure. It says medical grade silicone with no logos.....in the medical and pharmaceutical industry silicone contaminants are a known problem..it doesn't matter how pure or whatever, its completely soluble in the solvents we use. Even in the medical industry we are aware and try not to leech but yeait happens. That's why the silicone tubing will become stiff and will lose its stretchiness...silicone shouldn't be used with butane or really even iso or etoh as its still somewhat miscible..the completely pure cannabinoids aren't much better for direct contact...... "In the body crystalline silica particles do not dissolve over clinically relevant periods. Silica crystals can activate the NLRP3 inflammasome inside macrophages and dendritic cells andthereby result in processing of pro-Interleukin 1 betainto its mature form. Chronic exposure to silica may thereby account for some of its health hazards, as interleukin-1 is a highly pro-inflammatory cytokine in the immune system. [26][27][28] This effect can create an occupational hazard for people working with sandblasting equipment, products that contain powdered crystalline silica and so on. Sooo idk how smoked silicone would effect you....not good long term I don't think... I plan on smoking hash for a good few more decades... I wouldn't advise to blast or store long term..but as fade would say,even oxygen is toxic at high doses, all in the amount...something like that at least..... I don't know..until someone does some research or already has the prior knowledge(I don't feel confident 100% in my own knowledge of the subject). And can tell me assuredly there will be no issues,especially accumulate overtime and all that.. I won't use it...

most articles talking about the swelling also talk about tear strength, compression, or color. Being altered from the use...if it migrates in or gets absorbed to cause swelling it leaches when it comes back out Combined a couple quotes
And it does leach..just check skunk pharms page about it
Oh and if your confused why I said silica..... "When silicone is burned in air or oxygen, it forms solid silica (silicon dioxide) as a white powder,char, and various gases. The readily dispersed powder is sometimes called silica fume."

Are you saying to not ever use silicone containers even for storage? As in, what everybody uses and has been the easiest, most economical container
I have ever used for storage? I really do not have any care to go into the technical logistics of the negative health effects of using silicone, I just want
to know whether or not I would be able to get more wax from using the silicone container vs. a pyrex glass dish.

I know Top Shelf Extracts in CO use
silicone NoGoo slick pads, that is good enough for me...

No you won't get more wax..proper extracts can be touched with your fingers, there should be no loss in any non porous container... whatever makes you happy though
At least 10-30 years from now (it takes its sweet time, no cure though)you'll know why when your lungs are messed up

And yes storage is much better than blasting(relatively) Even the manufacturer says not to blast..

Just because a dispensary sells it doesn't mean anything. They do a lot of questionable things

The rules of "SAFE" change when you talk of vaporizing chemicals to inhale them..

While I agree 100% with most of your statements, and for sure with the stance on butane into a silicone dish.... but using a pic of a coal miners lungs who had TB and silicosis... to show what happens to a persons lungs who might inhale trace silica material via BHO.... is a bit of spin.... Like... 'Truth' campaign level shit....

Weren't any pics available of lungs affected JUST by silicosis?

Be like me seeing someone drinking a beer, and then lighting them on fire.... and saying "See what beer does!"

(Still people.... dont use silicone to catch your 'SOVENTS' its just not wise... same with parchment, slick pads, etc.... this is the kind of think pyrex is built for)

My concern is that when the butane comes back out, it will bring things with it, which I don't want in my oil.

Interestingly, as it turns out, Oil Slick themselves don't recommend the practice and I've attached a letter from Joshua stating so and exactly why.

I am sure you know, silicone swells in the presence on non-polar solvents. Hexane is actually used as a “swelling agent” for silicone tubing to allow for an easier connection.


The swelling effect is the primary reason why silicone makes a poor compatibility choice when selecting a material to come into prolonged direct contact with non-polars.


As you must also be aware, chemical contamination from “extractables” in silicone materials, (in a procedure such as you are describing) is due almost entirely to the physical release of low molecular weight siloxanes, and other impurities from the manufacturing process.


This is why Tygon 3350, or SaniTech-Ultra, are made with platinum cured silicone rather than the more common peroxide cured variety. This is also why We use platinum catalyzed USP6 silicone in our pads. (rather than peroxide/food grade).


As far as I am aware, we are the ONLY company doing this. The cost of material for a simple “baking mat” would be prohibitive in that industry.


For the record (sometime I feel like a broken record)We do not sell the Pad to spray directly onto. Many (many) folks do, and when we realized it (july of 2012), we switched the silicone we use as our raw material as aprophylactic measure.


We also removed the Logo from our pads, because we feared that immersion in non-polar solvent could act to weaken the bond between that thin layer of logo silicone, and the pad beneath. As concerned as we were about the logo....i cringe when I see folks spraying into parchment. The matrix of silicone in common parchment paper (non-Quilon / silicone coated) is extremely fragile compared to a pad. I imagine the violence of swelling and shrinking on that scale would be tenfold compared to the effect that prompted our own change of material.


The physical wear of swelling/shrinking/swelling/shrinking along with the various stresses inflicted by the innovative public (razor blades, torches etc...) make any sort of performance warranty unmanageable. So we make em as pure as it gets, and when people ask us....we tell em that if they insist on using them this way, to please discard them if they notice any physical degradation.


I would refrain from cutting the pad to perform your testing, as this will expose the inner weave. Once cut or torn, the physical consequences of swelling could lead to damage along the exposed area.


Let me know where to send it, and I will get a Pad out to you today. Always happy to hear your thoughts. I redacted about 2 pages of hyper technical diatribe from this email.... because I figured you have likely done your own research regarding Pt cured silicone, and the various plasticizers that are used in food grade silicone. This is understandably a topic quite close to my heart; and I will be vary happy to discuss at length should you have specific questions (or non-specific musings?).


Also, should you require it, you have my explicit permission to share anything we discuss with whichever forums you are involved in.
