Blackstar 240 VS Haight ppf-800 par results.

Not long ago I scored a Haight ppf-800 (180w) off craigslist for $150 and fell in love with it. I did par readings on the unit HERE.

After using it for a while I decided that I wanted a second one. For the life of me I could not find another one near the price I paid so I decided to look at other manufacturers. Blackstar being the obvious choice. There's other Chinese manufacturers but from what I read they are not of the same quality. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Needless to say I ordered a blackstar 240w from ebay, specs can be found HERE.

With readings like these I can't help but want a second one for my TV grow

Nice PAR reading, but it could have been a bit better if the lamps had been built with secondary optical lenses.
 
So the BS240 has almost the same PAR rating @ 12" as the haight gives off @ 2"?

The BS240 draws around 135w of power.... What does that haight draw?

Google says the haights advertised 180w IS their draw.. which would also make the BS240 more efficient as well.
I just need to find someone local now that has a 400w HPS so I can compare the two.
 
I'm actually surprised at those Umol readings of the blackstar/ not bad at all for the price and wattage(135w), take off the glass and you got yourself quite a bang for your buck IMO...........The HSS is known to be junk for awhile now at their prices/doubt it's drawing 180w with no finned heatsink/no fan==it wouldn't last six months with that power draw..........good info D3monic, thanks and + rep
 
dont be so fooled by those numbers. First the haight will have the same par reading for the size of the light (which is 3 times as big as a blackstar) and the haight is not even a good light to start with. So it's not because the blackstar scores so much higher than the haight that you should buy another blackstar. it's your call but my blackstar is my second shitiest light after the haight. Here I can share a picture of my cabinet with a blackstar and a haight. not that impressive compare to the rest of my grow. same soil, same everything...

not to mention PAR isnt something you can rely on when purchasing an LED light, there is a lot more to it

Do you have the 2012 blackstar 240w or the chinese knockoff. I saw youtube comparisons between the two and the real deal put out higher readings but that could of been a marketing video dunno.
Next to a spectroradiometer You would think PAR is the ONLY thing you can rely on when purchasing a LED light considering the measurement is for light that is photosyntheticly available radiation vs just lumens or even worse trying to go off wattage.

I'm no expert on the subject that's for sure though. Just read a blog post from apogee about meter accuracy when being used to measure light from LED's. He stated that some error is to be expected due to the fact the meters are calibrated with T5's with a cool white but they did have a meter error % chart based on the different bulb frequency.

So what would you say is a good flat LED light? I have the HSS also, and know it's not great but it's all I have for the most.
