friend of mine has a new growth on an outdoor plant that’s black. I’ve never seen this before. Anyone have an idea.

mastr,
Just a shot in the dark here...but looks to me like it's showing two things. One is N excess making it that dark green combined with a shortage of Mg. The Mg could just be a deficiency or maybe it's being antagonized and not absorbing properly.

I'd severely reduce feeding and add in some epsom salts for the next couple weeks to see how it looks. If improved...then continue with the ES (maybe at reduced rate) and be more modest with nutes too.

What is the plant growing in? Soil/pot/ground? What is he feeding it?

I just went through this. Dark purple/black on new growth...was a phosphorus deficiency for me. Switched to a bloom nute high in P and problem is going away.
