Hi chuckie, sorry to hear about your slow growing. I have mixed mine half and half with Jobe's organic plus add bonemeal, organic tomato food, an organic bloom booster (mostly bird crap and feathers), a bunch or perlite (like 1/3 perlite), etc. so hard to compare straight soil to my mix

Mine have grown bigger and faster than I expected. The Maui finished in just under 8 weeks and could have filled in more and gone longer but amber trichs showed up early!

same with other plants have grown not in this thread have gone quicker than expected but thanks for heads up as just transplanted an AK-48 this morning into mainly just that soil (was to lazy to go outside and get my Jobe's from trunk in junked car) so will get a chance to see but added much bonemeal, perlite, organic tomato food, and organic bloom booster to mix

I think I have always done good with rapid growth because I add about 1/3 perlite so I get robust root growth

looks good so whatever you are doing....you doing it right

my AK looked like that 1st pic right after stretch (my AK an auto) and yes there is drastic slowdown after stretch

I've used the tan bag (mixed with Jobe's except last pot) for almost a year now and seems ok....Not sure (but Jobe's is I think) made from local stuff (like mixed locally in your area from goodies there) so doesn't come from one main factory but many little ones across the country (I purchase at Walmart).

Several on this site don't have this at there local Walmart at all so some places can't even find

I like to mix mine with other mixes just in case one mix isn't that great and also since organic I like to add other stuff to make it better

I did a side by side with straight Ocean Forest from foxfarm and had many deficiencies I suspect because I didn't buy the expensive additive bottles so not a big fan of Ocean Forest as definitely saw smaller/slower growth

here is pic with side by side grow of White Widow clones straight Foxfarm on left..it's smaller and many spotted leaves, etc.

Update on Maui in big pot:

I've hit the ceiling! That is I am as high as I can get with my blurple. Maui about 4 inches under 3 feet and already too close to lights but will have to see and watch for bleaching!

I can take apart the pulley system and get about 3 inches more if needed....can't really tie down largest cola as need to turn daily if possible and really no where (room) to tie it down

Maui already budding and I trimmed bunch of lowest buds that would never amount to anything anyway

put my giant nugs (tops to colas) in glass jar with lid mostly off and rest of buds still in paper bag (giant nugs will dry much differently than other normal size buds)

AK-48 seems past calcium deficiency and is back on the rebound now finally....look how different seeded bud looks!

Week 7 update on AK-48; week 3 Maui, and end of week one AK-48 clone.

"7 week", AK past calcium deficiency; left some leaves and pulled off some. AK clone at end of 1st week and no real stretching...(autoflower related?) and has slow growth.

Had to change to mainly smaller cob light for Maui as has overgrown the blurple at over 3 feet from floor....hopefully the cob won't bleach but appears can get it closer than blurple as doesn't have the focus lenses like the blurple.

Maui filling in nicely for only 3 days shy of 3 weeks 12/12!

Can't resist to grab these little ones when I can.....have gotten some of my best males (for pollen) this way

although may be a female.....it's either a White Widow + AK-48 or a White Widow (+plus either Bubblelicious or Blue Moon) + AK-48

Guess I'll know if it's male/female in about a month....stay tuned!

Been 12 days now since harvest of two Maui and after hanging for two days and paper bags for three days am now burping jars about 10 min per day (24hr period....and have been doing this about a week now) and will soon go to 10 min every two days for two or three then once a week for awhile etc.

Don't have a scale (grow for personal medical) but ended up with little under two and a half quart jars of very tight/condense dankity-dank buds. One jar are the big top cola buds. Smoke is very good and actually expands some in lungs (haven't seen that for long time...although not as much as strain of Maui grew 20 years ago but these were fem seeds). The Maui has hashy taste with great cerebral buzz followed by mellow body buzz (same as 20 years ago). Found Maui 20 years ago to be great for pain relief and on Overgrow was ranked #3 in potency however many ranked it #1. It is considered one of the best non-resistant (don't have to keep smoking more for same buzz) strains as an afternoon smoke (or evening/or both) will bring on the same good buzz as morning etc. with same amount of pot.

Maui is more of a Sativa dom but does work great for pain and after initial heady up can easily relax and drift off too sleep. I'm more of a sativa fan as like the cerebral aspect and not much on couch-lock so I am excited about this AK-48 as has some of my favorite old time strains: Colombian, Mexican, Afghan, and Thai.

I saw Afghan pot/leaves growing in Mexico south of Mexico City beside the roads in 1978 (it's different from long Mexican sativa leaves...the Afghan are short fat leaves). Grew up smoking Mexican swag and brown and gold Colombian (man the taste of that Colombian). Best pot I ever smoked though were Thai sticks bought in Singapore in 1982 (talk about expand in the lungs) and much better than the many Thai sticks bought here in U.S. back once upon a time.

Pics of recent Maui harvest and some AK-48 pics...harvest likely soon but no amber yet!

Day 64 Ak-48 and good solid 10%+ amber trichs. Will chop tomorrow before lights come on. Very frosty....pics do not do justice. Just with naked eye can see what looks like patches of snow in places.

Have AK-48 X WW (White Widow) seedlings, a few Mosca special mix mystery freebies, and at least one, "Ice". Hopefully more to pop.

But first some parting pics of AK-48.

Just a few update pics of where current closet grow is at. Tossed runt AK-48 so only have two in grow closet now...."Maui big pot", at day 38 (middle of week 6 over 3 feet tall!) and other is the last of the Maui clones placed in 12/12 on 7/10 (just few days ago).

Had two more, "Ice", pop this morning in paper towel and another broke soil surface this morning so have at least two, "Ice", and possibly four. Hope at least one is male!

Chopped pic of AK and will post smoke review with some partially cured bud pics eventually.

Maui update day 47 (few days shy of week 7). Overfed curly leaves up! Darn! Too much bloom booster and dolomite lime as believe Phosphorus is the culprit as Nitrogen overfed would be tips hook down (hate it when I do that). And with approx. a week to go (this a clone of prior Maui that finished at end of 8 weeks) this Maui also has too much nitrogen (leaves too dark)....not enough fade!

So kinda bad timing on nutes apparently but other than that we be jamming!

Also, pic of last Maui clone in 2nd week 12/12.

AK-48 smoke report/review:

I'm little early as cured bud barely smoke-able yet but (of course left some out to dry slightly faster) and the taste is slightly skunky with a kinda antiseptic aftertaste.... Afghani ? Researched Afghan strain and saw most comes from Afghanistan but was brought to the U.S. in the 1970's from Holland so wonder who brought it to southern Mexico because in 1978 I saw it myself growing beside the road south of Mexico city along the Pan-American highway. Also, saw Mexican sativa further North (some trees!).

Oh well, very strange!

Considering this strain is Afghani, Colombian, Mexican, and Thai then one would think it would be very cerebral and one would be more than correct in that assumption. AK-48 is very cerebral in an almost supernatural way. Not as good as astral travel but will take you right up to the brink.

Find myself sitting there after only a puff or two just holding my pipe wondering what just happened! Then I set the pipe down!

If you like space trucking and catching incoming from the universal creative river then this is good stuff for you. If you need to actually do anything or get anything done then better wait on this one. First phase actually kinda up and heady followed by casual couch/space-out lock.

I like it a lot!

Funny the light skunk taste almost reminds me of some serious dank Humboldt county smoked back in early 80's when I was in the region. But this is very light taste but also very sweet like Humbolt.

I thought I would throw this little guide in to help any others that found themselves in similar situation. Unfortunately, some seedbanks sell old seeds and when that happens your germination rate may be determined by how much you help the little ones along.

I had some obviously old seeds when only a few out of 10 would even pop tap roots in a paper towel. Actually two out of ten, "Crystal", and four out of ten, "Ice".

I save and use rainwater for my seeded paper towel and always transfer seed with tap root to small cup with hole in soil about 1/4" to half inch depending upon length of taproot without touching taproot.

Oftentimes it seems on old seeds that some use all available energy/fuel? to push out the tap root and got nothing left to push seed too surface once in soil and if seed sits there very long with tap root not doing anything then, "damping off" can begin to occur rapidly.

This is when after a few days may have to dig down with a toothpick carefully to expose a seed head to light. Careful not to touch the actual seed head! When the seed head is exposed to light it will usually begin to grow up towards the light.

Old seeds that break the soil on time (plus those one has to help break surface) often won't shed the seed hull! They just stay kinda bent over and damping off (and death will soon follow).

At this point I mist the seed head lightly and let water suck up in and around the the partially separated hull. Then let that sit for say 10 minutes and lightly mist again.

Then you can take your toothpick and hook it under where the seed hull is separated and carefully tug to open the hull. I have had good luck with two toothpicks (one in each hand) and separating the hull by pulling it apart from two directions at same time.

Then usually the cotyledons (first leaves) are stuck together at tip by, "small round rust colored thing"!?!? I have scrubbed these off with misting and toothpick but have found the easiest way (at least for me) is to use my fingernail. I have even countless times pinched off much of the cotyledons and as long as they open (even if stuck at angle) and 1st true leaves tips show up then you got it.

On one shown in pic I supported one side of seedling with finger with one hand while I pinched off rust dot with finger nail on other hand so as to prevent shocking.

If the cotyledons don't open then fluid will rapidly rot between cotyledons and damping off occurs and dies but if you can get the cotyledons open (even if one gone and only part of other one) and tiny tips show up in there then you got it.

All of my seedlings (in post after this one) were done this way to some extent or another. Best I had was two out of the 6 actually penetrated the soil surface but then had to remove hulls (for me it's obvious after some hours after breaking surface if gonna shed hull or not by itself). Problem is the longer they sit with partial hull and cotyledons clamped together the more likely some form of damping off will occur. Certainly can't leave em more than a day with seed hull still attached.

last of seedling progression pics before some major transplanting. The two AK-48 are a week (and more) ahead of other clones and have both been topped twice (initial stalk plus two out-shoots leaving for four main colas....and all will be topped same eventually) and will go into 12/12 soon. The largest of "Ice", and "Crystal", clones have a few weeks yet to 12/12.
