I hade to chuckle when I saw this. Those are $20K when they are new . . .
The application is actually really cool. That is a Turbomolecular pump that can create an environment in the chamber that is more pristine (in vacuum terms) than outer space. We use those for our friends at Nasa to pre-flight bake out parts and components destined for the stars. All of the wire harnesses used on the current Mars Rover were baked out in a Cascade TEK oven. It might be as close as I ever get to the moon!

Pulls way too low a vacuum. Molecular pumps are just that. They scavenge individual gas molecules.
Pulling much below -29.5" Hg, boils away the THC at ambient temperatures, and at that level, it is still a "rough vacuum."
They are a cool looking pump though, and we did get to watch one do it's thang on an oven baking out Moon Project harnesses at the Cascade TEK lab in Hillsboro. Apparently they are basically just rotating fingers that grab any molecule that happens to hit them.
