Hey guys, new here. Looking forward to see what the forum has to offer.

Just wondering what are the best options we have in Canada.

Right now im just using Happy frog 50% then Ocean Forest %50. Then added Perlite.

Should I just stick with this ? Or is there a better bagged option.

I am partial to Pro Mix HP right out of the bag. I don't add anything to it and it works well.

It is a soil-less mix - sphagnum peat moss mixed with dolomitic and calcitic lime, perlite and mycorrizhae. Canadian Tire sells them for $33 per 3.8 cubic litre compressed bale.

Make my own mix in US but would be the same. SPM and perlite and compost. Compost can be your own or vermicompost or any commercial compost of good report.
This is unamended base mix. Up to half perlite.

$60 here in Alaska and worth it. I reuse it repeatedly. Empty it outside after chop. Leave it for the rain and snow to leach it. The pH rises to normal by the time the grow is completed when using new peat. The used medium gives zero problems for new plants. I refresh the mycorrhizae with Mykos when using the old medium.

No shit? After you dump it outside, do you leave it in a pile then turn it a few times, like compost, and re-fill the buckets after a few weeks/months of leaching?
I do leave in a heap and I do turn it. I leave it over winter and then turn again in Spring.

Been constantly recycling and amending for years and found an easy way to get SPM wet initially with a weighted bucket in a bucket of peat moss and water. I use totes. Have all sorts of meals and minerals to mix as I please.

I see pro-mix in all the shops here in Toronto, its either that or Fox farm.
Crappy Tire had the 3.8 cubic foot bales on for $33.00. Pretty good considering the best I found was from a local hydro store selling that exact same bale for $45.

Is pro-mix hot ? or is it a mild soil ?
Pro Mix is inert. You still provide your normal nutes, supplements and stuff like that. It's a mix of peat moss, perlite, lime and mycorrizhae.

I use fox farm ocean forest at 28$ per bag not sure where your located but I've been looking into black swallow living soils http://blackswallowsoil.com they have kis mix at 22$ per cu/ft and there's a place out west in BC https://www.boogie-brew.ca/KBS.php at 29.99$ not sure of bag size. I may try the black swallow soil along side ffof since they are local to me.
I'm trying out their KIS blend. It's great stuff, I added neem, karanja, and shrimp meal and pumice.

For bagged you cant beat pro mix for an easy one. Alberta premium SPM is the best base you can find for cheap if you wanna make your own.
