Best reflector?

I am not talking about for heat or anything like that, lets pretend heat is never an issue.

What kind of reflector would be absolute best output? Umbrella? wing? hood? cooltube? lets hear it.

umbrellas cover more area (a little less efficiently unless youre using a 100ow bulb), wings work great and will be your cheapest option, a hood would be my choice, but i worry about heat buildup and use fans and ducting. a cootube would be your best choice if you plan to use a fan to cool it off. bc of its design, optimium airflow can be achieved and will allow you to place the light much closer to the plants than any other reflector... you can pretend heat wont be an issue but the heat from the bulb alone changes a lot of things. id buy the cooltube and a fan to cool it off so it can be closer...

WTXgreenery, appreciate the info, I have a setup just toying with the idea of a new one for my bloom room. heat really isnt a problem at the moment, I have direct AC to the room, and during the hottest of the days the room may get 84F with 2 HPS 400's running.

I am looking at going to 2 600's as my room is 4x6 and wanting opinions for myself and also possibly for others looking at the issue of reflector/hood.

I am looking to see what people think is the best in spreading usable light, with or without worrying about heat

i use sun sytems yield master 2 with the upgraded reflectors (i think 98% reflective instead of 86% or something very close to that) and they are awesome. they contain the heat and the fan pushes it outdoors

Okay..hello to all..1st post..so..apologies if "I'm Doing It Wrong"...truly.

Okay..found this site/forum/post as a result of doing a 'search' for this very subject (Anyone else beginning to notice the..lack.of effectiveness of the 'web' in generating 'Basic Answers' To 'Basic Queries' with 'Sufficient/Pointed Information'? I Am.)

Anyway..okay..been using these 'Hoods' For Years. I found them in my first foray's into the 'Indoor' Transition..as I learned this new information (Was 'Traditional' 'till that point aka 'UnderSky') I came in contact with allot of people/opinions. This was "Back In The Beginning" so most of the info was at VERY Least.."Untestable". But in SF I found this dude in his "Corner Market" selling gear and hardware who..no Exaggeration.."Insisted" on these Hoods he had. His Information and Product were all from a literal "Industrial Lighting Supply" Manufacturer in Canada that makes "Hoods" aka "Reflectors" for Industrial Lighting of the kind found in truck stops and gas stations etc.. He had a really..MASSIVE Amount of Information and actual "Specs" as well for the "Powder Coating" vs. "Aluminum" (Stippled typically) etc... I'm talking Genuine "Studies". Reams of Paperwork.

I bought the Hoods.

From the Start..The One Issue that always bugged me...is their Size and sort of "Low Level" of "Tech" even then they looked "Primitive". From the "Sealing". The "Glass" is held in place with "Clips" that are almost impossible to remove and thus cleaning/changing lamps etc is a real..serious..chore..and thus is typically "Not Done As Often As It Should Be".To The "Size". These hoods are also "Simplistic" in the "Venting" which is "Angled" and just..in general umm.."Eccentric".

But then..there was ALL...that "Information". I mean the Makers of these Hoods had really.."Fer Reals" studied the issue and effectiveness of "Reflection Of Light" to the Organic Material Below. I was convinced and Bought Em.

Now..all that being said? For YEARS These have worked "Just Fine". I Never had any "Reason" to look elsewhere or "Try Another Hood". Yield Seemed Fine..all "Issues" dealt with and only "Guessing" to make "Comparisons".

Until Last Year.

(Diabolical Prop19 Crash In Post Logging/Fishing/Housing Rural America Has Caused Many of us "Contented Few" to Be Forced to "Increase Yield". Is it Just Me? Or Is "Replacing 10,000 independent Growers..a Decided..tax Benefit..with..and I quote from an Oakland City Council Member; "..300 Employees of a Corporate Style Growing Operation.." Not a very smart move? I mean how is Reducing the Number of Independents a "Good Thing For Taxes and The Economy"?

Anyway...Couldn't Find the "Old Ones".

Went with the "Big One" the "XXXL" (sic?) trying to "Fix" the Problems I thought were present in my "Old Ones".

And I can now..report..the "Yield" from under my "Old Crazy 600w Reflectors"..with their "Not-Really Sealed Glass"..their white "Powder Coating"..and TINY Size..is literally:

"VISIBLE".

I mean you can literally.."SEE" the difference in "Yield".

I'm talking about "Grams Per Square Inch" here okay? So the Over-all "Yield Difference" between a Giant New Hood and the Old Ones? The Old Ones are Producing POUNDS More. It is just that simple. The Plants are Happier and Thicker and Healthier under the "Old Funky Hoods" than they are under the "New Shiny Ones".

And the "Web"? Is Useless in this regard. But I Have "Proof". As Close to "Scientific Evidence" as is in reality possible..to suggest that the "Shiny New Mega Hood" with all it's "Marketing" is..Not..as good. Not even Close..as these funky old "Powder Coated Industrial Lighting Hoods" from Canada (I think?).

Alas..I cannot find these old one anywhere. "ACS" is ALL the "Markings" on the "Product". No Address. No Information..No 'Name' Nuthin. And of course along with so many 'Grow Stores' in "Post Privatization/Walmart Of Weed is A Good Thing" Reality..he too..is Gone. Vanished. (He Also Convinced me and sold me on the "First" waaaay Ealry 'Digital" Ballasts. Old..(Now Even Look Ancient "Lumateks" with I kid you not "Hand Done Labels" actually "hand Inspected"..sigh).

So..to answer the Question in this long way (Freedom Of Speech Okay?) I would say "Powder Coated Industrial Lighting Hoods" are Absolutely Superior to the "Stippled Aluminum". Sadly "Heat Is An Issue" so even now I am looking.."Again" for new Hoods because the New "Sealed" Mega Corporate Hoods Are SO Good at keeping Heat Oou of the Area that its Reduced Energy Costs And Humidity. Both Decidedly "Good" nay scratch that.."Awesome" Characteristics. So?

Best "Reflectors"?

Powder Coated.

Best "Fantasy Hood"?

"Big-ish, Powder Coated 'ACS' Hood With 'New Tech' Sealed Glass Inserts and 6" Vents."

If that Were Available..it would be the Dominant Product on the Market because the Obvious and simply.....Overwhelming... Growth and "Difference"...is simply "Overt"...Visible and Undeniable and simply "Done Deal Better Product/Yield Under Those Hoods"

"Period."

Anyone know where this can be found?
