Best pH testers and how to use?

Electronic is the way to go. Test strips are handy too, but only as an emergency! pH meters are a "get what you pay for" type of deal. Anything under $50 is generally junk, and a good tri-meter that does pH/ppm/temps continually updating can run around $150-$200 for a nice one on eBay. As for the pH up or pH down what brand, I use general hydroponics brand but they are all really the same.
I'm going to suggest that you visit your local hydroponics store and see what they have to offer. Mine gave me three choices: a cheapie at around $50 which I passed on for the one I bought made by Milwaukee for $66.95 and it came with a lifetime guarantee. That became pretty important because it got out of calibration and wouldn't adjust after a couple of months and they exchanged it for another new one without any problem and it's been working fine for over a year.The third choice was a tri-meter and I didn't feel that was necessary for an Aerogarden.

I would beg to differ, there are huge differences in all PH up and downs, I use advanced nutes ph down and it is sooo strong, like i adjust 10 gallons with a drop at a time. The liter weighs about 10 times as much as a liter of any other chemical. It is almost a pain in the ass because it's so strong.
There is also different chemical composition to may of them. So look at the labels next time your at the grow shop...JR
