Bat and Seabird Guano Hazardous??!! Might want to read on..!!

Hey everyone,

I was just doing a little browsing around about the use of Rabbit poop for fertilizer which seems to be pretty good for immediate use (2-1-1) but it also lead me to some information which I wasn't to sure about and wanted some input...

It seems that when using bat and bird poops, there is a fungus that may be present which can be hazardous to our health...

Histoplasm capsulatum google it!!

Check it out....this fungal disease of the lungs is passed on by a fungi that attaches to the mycillium cells and may be responsible for things such as respiratory illness and more....and its very serious...not just a chest cold..

Anyone ever thought of this before? Had experience with it ??

The bacterial concern as well as the plundering / disruption of the habitats of bats makes me think when this bag of guano is gone I'm done with it. There are other materials that can be used with as good or better results. And I'll feel better about it.

Spores are the worst things. You should wear a mask I hold my breath until I dump it in my tea batch. However the very thing that makes them so bad is what makes them so good. Blood and bone meals have their issues as well as any fertilizer that comes from the ass of an animal they have bacterias.

So... I highly recommend you do not lick the spoon!!

After reading this I am definitely going to be mixing any guano's outside and wearing a bandana to avoid inhaling. I already can instantly picture the times dumping the powdered guano into my tea's and seeing all the fine powder/dust float off in the air... I tried to cover my mouth/nose but still, how long do the spores float around....? make me hope my batch of poo was good..

There are many sources of the bacteria and fungi. Including the air we breathe. A little Espoma for example

The pathogens are in the dust from these products while they are dry and we inhale them. A dust mask and gentle handling takes care of that. Once in solution the pathogens are not passed onto the plant for us to uptake later. They are safe too use...

NOW you tell me!?!??

I don't use guanos simply because I can source other things locally and cheaper.

That being said, I did get a small bag of Peruvian Seabird guano to try and find a long term, slow release, N and P for my mother plants.

We'll see how that works out.

Hey Wet go easy on the seabird poo. I have never used it as a premix in my medium but have made teas with it. And its some pretty hot stuff. My guess is lots of ammonia....

Will do.

I lightly top dressed with some and added to the mix in others. Just remembering something I read about it long ago was that it does best mixed into the mix because it is so slow to break down.

Haven't tried it in a tea. Like I said, I'm looking for a long term N&P source for my long term plants, like 3+ months or longer.

how about Soft Rock Phosphate for slow release P?
slow release N is hard to think of.....

I am guessing you ground the pellets up some before top dressing, which I am sure you did. I am just saying this so someone dosent top dress with a hand full of pellets, possibly creating some hot spots....

Soft rock Phos is in the mix.

No, I didn't crush them up. What I did was a thin layer of fresh EWC, then sprinkled a few pellets around and covered these with more EWC.

Like I said, an experiment. All the mothers are the same strain and I have 7 of them. They are all over a year in the same pots and if I don't kill them, they will get flowered out eventually.

I have 5 new mothers in my standard mix for backup and to become new moms down the line. Same strain.

I use it in my teas. Easier to control besides it is pricey a tea goes further imo. I use a blender to crush it up I started with a coffee grinder but it is so hard it trashed two after the 3rd grind each.

Yeah this is why I been seriously thinking of switching over to a complete plant based organics. No poops except for worm casting. I've heard the end result is a no cough bong rip with best flavors and smell. There is bottled nutrients out now that can sub stain a well grown plant all the way threw flower with no poops. Next round I'll have it a go.

I just finished a Plush Berry grow in SuperSoil. No manure, and used fish bone meal. EWC.

Smoothest smoke right out of the dirt that I've grown. I dried for a week then jarred. Been smoking it daily since. I can take a big rip on my harsh-as-shit pipe. Very surprising. I love the taste

I agree with the soil and poo making great tasting smooth nugs...my last grow/ and 1st I used indonesian, mexican and jamaican bat guano's, peruvian seabird guano and worm casings and some of the smoothest tastiest nugs Ive had...bong rips without a wince or cough... organic all the way!

I think from now on I def will be mixing outdoors or at least covering my face though... nobody likes a poop sniffer...lol
