Basic question on light distance

I notice some recommendation saying the LED panel should be positioned 24" above the flowering plants. I was under the impression a benefit of LEDs was the ability to place them close to the plants like CFLs. Can anyone get into a little detail on light distance with LEDs?

I do believe the distance would have to correlate with the LED arrays Wattage.
I myself run what maybe considered Low watt LED's. 2 -50 watts and 1- 100 watt. But, I only Flower a few to a couple plants @ a time.
Being of lower wattage LED's. My lights are about 12" off the canopy. So far that works for me.

The goal of any lighting system is to meet the plants requirements for growth. That requirement is ~600-1000µmols for flower....and even a little more if you got it.

So what ever height meets that is where they should be(then just accept the coverage). Unfortunately, par meters aren't everyday garden tool, so the recommended hanging height stated by the manufacturer should correlate to the requirements. But no guarantee on that.

Cheap and/or lower wattage led's will need to be hung lower to keep up the intensity. While the better led's are just as powerful if not more than any hps. And will need to be at 20"-24" and still meet the µmols(light) requirements for the plants.

LEDs are not a cheaper or less powerful choice to hps...they are just as powerful and better when you get a quality light that will truly meet and exceed the plants requirements.

Apache, A15, illumitex, CLW and maybe blackdog. My 2cents.

Allright, thanks for the info. LEDs will probably be my next big purchase. I'm currently running RDWC in a closet 2'8"x7' although 1 foot of space is reserved for the chiller. I typically grow 3 plants around 2'x2' each.

Should I look for 3 small LED units to supply each plant with a close light source, or 2 larger LED units? I've seen a few brand names tossed around. Can anyone recommend brand/model/#of units in consideration of my grow area?

Edit: Looks like most of them are made for a 3'x2' area and I could possibly fit three in my space.
