Barney's Farm LSD

Welcome to my second grow (:

With help from this forum, my first grow was wildly successful. I did make a lot of mistakes, especially in the seedling stage which slowed everything down a lot. I'm two weeks further along than I was last time.

The seeds were started on March 17th and roots were penetrating the bottom of the rockwool cubes by March 21st. They were moved into the DWC buckets yesterday afternoon. The Barney's seeds were a lot smaller than any seeds I've seen before. They were soaked in tap water for 48 hours then planted in the cubes. All seeds broke the surface within 36 hours. I plant five seeds for every grow and and get rid of the weakest plant. Unfortunately this time there was no weak plant.

For this grow I purchased a new Hydrofarm 60watt air pump. I figured more air is better. Don't buy this pump! It was so loud and hot! It raised the temperature of the buckets by 6° in 40 minutes. The hoses were fused to the nozzle and I had to cut them off. Needless to say this is going back to amazon.

Specs of the grow
3x3 secret jardin tent.
HLG 300v2 LED light.
DWC

thanks @mmjmon

So I had my first real issue since I started growing. The roots came out of the netpots on Friday March 29 and by the next day the tips of the leaves were shriveling and turning purple underneath. Res PPM was 130 and PH was between 5.9 and 6.3. Res temps were a little high 69° but that goes down once there's enough leaves covering the top of the bucket.

I last calibrated the PH meter right before my harvest, maybe three weeks ago but figured I should do it again since it couldn't be the nutrient concentration in the buckets. When I placed the meter in the 7.0 calibration fluid it was reading 7.9  I didn't even look to see what it was reading in the 4.0 fluid. After calibration I checked the buckets again and it was reading between 5.0 - 5.1. Ouch! After buffering them back to 5.8 everything started recovering and growing again by Sunday and roots are looking happy.

I broke the zipper in my cheap secret jardin tent last week so I ordered a new 3x3 gorilla grow tent with the 7'11" extension kit. I didn't measure the basement before I ordered. It fit with less than an inch between the ceiling and the roof of the tent. I couldn't use the extension kit. It's a nice tent and made running air hoses a lot cleaner than how I had them before.

Looks great so far LG! You can't go wrong with Barney's...I've grown out their Vanilla Kush, Red Dragon, Acapulco Gold, Pineapple Chunk, Critical Kush, Crimea Blue, and Tangerine Dream - all with decent success. The buckets look great - good luck!! I'll follow along... :weed:

LSD was what I wanted to grow my first time around. was unable to find it in Canada and Barney's doesn't deliver here. I managed to find a vendor in Niagara Falls who had stock and so we went for a day trip. Pineapple Chunk is what I'm thinking about growing this fall.

Someone had told me that they're prone to being hermaphrodites. I hope that's not true, one of my plants did that last grow and I had to take it down a week early.

I think everything has fully recovered from the low PH and it's putting out a lot of roots now.

People want to hate on Barney's but I've seen good bud produced with their seeds and I still like their coffeeshops. I haven't liked all of their offerings in their coffeeshops but I've never been to ANY coffeeshop that I liked 100% of their bud.

I'm from Calgary, AB, and I've always placed my seed orders online from 'The Attitude' seedbank.. ( https://www.cannabis-seeds-bank.co.uk/ ) ...always received my orders from them within 3-4 weeks and haven't lost any in the mail so far. The nice thing about them, is you can order 'Pick & Mix' (which means just a single-seed) from most breeders there, and they also give freebies. :)

Barney's just released a Gelato strain, and a Gorilla Zkittles strain that look awesome. That LSD is a classic though - you won't be disappointed!

Nice roots by the way - looking nice a healthy!

Nice clean setup you got there, I'll be following along as well.

How do you maneuver the plants around when you need to top-off the buckets / change water? I can't imagine it's the easiest thing to do when the plants are larger.

You have to keep a fan blowing on those big air pumps and screw them down to something like a small wooden stool or something else that's stable, most of them have little holes in their rubber feet for that purpose. I use the largest size hydrofarm air pump they make, but I can only use it because I have great ventilation and concrete floors, otherwise I'd be screwed from heat haha.

Woohoo I'm along for round 2! I've bought seeds from a vendor in Niagera falls before :) too! I had to bring mine back over the boarder though and it was about 15 years ago so things were a lot different back them.

I had no idea Barney's had coffeeshops.

@Dayzt I'm kinda interested in Zkittles as well. Too many strains and too little time.

@smokebros if you saw my last grow in the hydroponic forum, I really struggled with reservoir changes... slugging gallons of water around the house. I started dreading the weekly res change because it would take me several hours and I probably would have quit if I had to continue doing that. Now I have a small pump that I use to drain and fill the reservoirs and all the hoses are run through the ceiling to the laundry room. I have a 20 gallon rubbermaid trash can next to the tent and pump RO water into it. I don't do any heavy lifting anymore.

@Apocalypse 82 gorgeous plant! I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on the effects one you've dried and cured.

@Logan Burke I sent it back to amazon it was just too loud for me. I'm using two of these pumps right now. https://www.amazon.ca/Hydrofarm-AAPA15L-Active-Air-Outlets/dp/B002JPEVMC/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=hydroponic+pump&qid=1554398744&s=gateway&sr=8-6

Man I wish I haven't been to Niagra since 2006, and I used to go 3 times a week when I was 19. I lived right over the border and used to go dancing at the clubs up there. Sadly I am to far from that area to make the trip. I havn't even been up there to visit family since 2011 I think. Having a family makes trips tough. Awesome idea though, I've always wanted to go to one of the RIU meets ups. I've had the privilege to become good friends with a few people on here over the years, and we've gotten to meet, but one of the BBQs like they do out west would be awesome.

I had the very same issue as you with res changes. I started doing DWC right as I came down with a neruomuscular disease that really impedes my muscle strength, and res changes were the bane of my DWC hobby lol, so I really do feel your pain there! However, when I began using beneficial microbes it really helped, suddenly I began to not have PH drops or other issues until after about 2-4 weeks versus 5 to 7 days. Perhaps you can consider giving those a try? :) Of course if I begin seeing signs or symptoms of a problem I do a res change, but as long as everything is smooth sailing I just leave my 5 gallon DWC buckets be and my life has become so much easier! I hope that you can find this very same equilibrium in your grow, as I know it's quite demanding to do res changes so often! I'm along for this grow though, I'm happy to see what your results will be!

Glad to hear you figured out a solution for the water changes. A few years ago I experimented with a single-site DWC and decided that if I ever go that direction that I'd need to construct a system that recirculates. It was a lot of hard work when it came to topping off and doing water changes.

Do you have link to your other journal?

I've been using voodoo juice since the very beginning. I wanted to use hydroguard but you can't find that stuff in Canada for some reason and ebay shipping charges are more than the product. I'm using GH RapidStart this time, I got a free 125ml sample and figured I'd give it a try. The roots are growing way faster than they did last time, but that could likely be attributed to my inexperience with seedlings and rockwool.

Last time I changed the res every seven days like clockwork and that's probably good advice for a newbie. This time I'm being a bit more pragmatic and using what I learned from the last grow. They went into the dwc on Sunday March 24 and I haven't done a res change yet, I'll probably let it go until the weekend of the 13th. It should be ready for a higher nutrient concentration by then. Last grow I did a res change when there were four tiny roots hanging in the water, still feel kinda stupid having done that lol.
