I've just recently set up a small veg room and I pulled my 150 watt metal halide bulb out of the closet to use again

But it only runs for about 4 minutes then shuts off, what is causing this?

First off your not giving much info.......like is the ballast turning off or just the light.
It could be either. A light with a bad starter will try to start then recycle.
Just to make a wild guess on limited info......I would get a new bulb so you can eliminate the bulb. If the new bulb wont start then there must be a problem with the ballast.
Good luck.

well i purchased the ballast back around may I think. I used it for a while then put it in my closet and haven't tried to use it until just recently.

the ballast 150 Watt Metal Halide Ballast - 120, 208, 240 & 277 Volt - Sola # E-MCA00W151 Light Bulb

the bulb 150 Watt - Metal Halide - 4000K - Coated - MH150/ED17/C/U/4K - Plusrite #M01506172402 Light Bulb

The light when turned on warms up then runs about 3/4 minutes then shuts off, I can hear the ballast still running if i listen.

I can try again and the light will turn on couple minutes then off again, you think that it is a problem with the light bulb then?

I don't know for sure if the bulb is trying to restart after it shuts off because i know that MH bulb's can't immediately restart, they must cool down a little and wait.

Any other info needed?

the bulb and ballast were purchased at the time time around may of this year , I just checked the bulb and there are no fragments, however the outlet is an old two prong one, without a ground.

So since it had no ground i ran a 10' extension cord to a nearby grounded outlet, and the same result occured on for 3,4 minutes then bulb shutdown occurs

I would try getting a new bulb and see if that stops it, but you shouldn't have to replace the bulb yet. So either way you kind of got screwed either they sold you a crappy ballast or a crappy bulb. I hope for your sake its just the bulb thats the cheaper fix.
