Just watched the first two parts of this three part BBC documentary.
It follows the rise of political is Islam and US neo-conservatism in the 40s and 50s, beginning with Sayyid Qutb and Leo Strauss.
It compares and contrasts the two movements and their shared emphasis on rescuing their respective worlds from relativism with an emphasis on Manichean myths in which they represent pure good and pure evil.
For example, both groups believe that they were responsible for the break up of the USSR, which was pretty much on the way out before their tanks crossed the Afghan border in 1979.
Most of the Bush administration neo-con appointed were eggs Nixon laid, and they have a long history of squabbling the CIA, even using CIA disinformation threat-assessments about the USSR to shape policy. Kissenger was one of their big enemies, as was George H.W. Bush. The best thing that ever happened to spread this nonsense was the Iranian revolution and the election of Ronald Reagan, the senile thespian/statesman hero of people who think actors shouldn't have opinions about politics.
Rummy actually posed on deck in a flight suit years before Bush did.
The slight liberal bias shows up, when they run through the list of myths that the neo-cons have used to rally the faithful, but little attention to which of the Islamist talking points are made-up. It's next to impossible to find unbiased information on either faction
It's still really interesting and full of information that I was unaware of and you can download it at archive.org or watch it on youtube
