Anyone gardening with decomposed granite?

Have been seeing this decomposed granite more and more lately for walkways and patios. The stuff is great. No pavers, cheap ($30/ton, $23/yd), nice natural look and drains well. There is DG with hardener added for surfaces like walkways. It is suited for dryer climates more so than heavy rains.

I hear about people using loose dg for cacti gardens and succulents. Has anyone done this? Have any tips? Blends specifically... I guess you can plant right in loose dg, but some mix DG and a fast draining soil.

This landscape designer was telling me about her idea for rocks, dg and succulents. She is going to pile up large rocks against a corner of her fence. Then fill in the cracks and spaces with DG, then plant succulents in the DG.

This is a little different but pretty much the same thing.I helped a friend using straight DG for their cactus mounds here in AZ and they love it!
BEST THING ITS FREE!!!
I really have no choice but to and its much nicer than lets say sand, clay or solid rock.Part of the mountain my property is on had to be cut into so its everywhere including the places I garden and with proper amending works out to be pretty good other than the fact that it keeps on comming lol. They cut the property in areas with to steep of incline so as it decomposes it crumbles everywhere.I hump a couple tons annually outa here easily to ppl who need fill dirt or whatever project I need it for..One guys yard that ive dumped to has made a pretty nice garden area in it and it doing great. They key is just amending it to your plants liking.....but yeah I garden with it.At the end of the year when im pulling up,I find roots growing into this shit so they like something in it!
Below is a back wall area where I grow peppers, tomatoes, tomatillos and even grew corn there and the level above it, and the front is nothing but a DG/compost mix under all my raised beds which had tomatoes that had 6' long roots on them that im sure had to do with the DG keeping the soil broken up enough to allow for such growth ;)

Decomposed granite is a good source of minerals. I sometimes I spread it on my lawn along with fertlizer

I also add it to the soil when I plant certain types of plants. I have noticed that one of my plants called: autumn sage really likes some decomposed granite mixed in the soil. I have 4 autumn sages that are flourishing and it's b-cuz of the minerals

So, yes.....you can top dress with decomposed granite plus you can add some with new plantings!

Nice. So far I have only used it as a base for patio. walkways. stuff like that. I am about to do some gardening with it too though.

I am making a simple DG pation right now... I have to say... this is waaay easier and waay cheaper than doing a brick patio....
I like it too because if I ever wanted to upgrade the patio I could easily put flagstone right on the surface and sweep a little dg in to fill the spaces.

I am going to try a little mountain of limestone with dg filling in the crack.... succulents and cacti will fill in the cracks.
So far, I love DG. I live about 25 minutes from a huge source of the stuff... so we get cheaper prices here than most anywhere else.
