Anyone DIY an inline particulate filter for RDWC?

There's open cell foam at the pet store made to filter fish tanks. A sheet of foam could make dozens of filters, use and discard. No mesh to clean between grows. I'm just not sure how to build it. Shoving a piece of foam in the irrigation line doesn't seem like the best option. I'll probably come up with something reasonable but I wanted to see if anyone has already tackled a similar project.

A stilling basin would be better. Long and deep. Return in one end, outflow on the other passive. Then filter that. There are tons of inline filter systems out there that work but need to be matched to a pump. But the easiest to set up could be an inline fuel filter for a motorcycle. Clear glass canister that is capped on each end and a screen in it. Gets filled then unscrew it, clean the filter and screw it back together.

Thanks for the suggestions. One idea that just occured to me, I can get bulkheads with a pre-filter attached. It's a small cage with holes about the same size as the holes on a net pot. If I wrap them with open cell foam and secure with a piece of wire I think that would keep the pump safe. I need bulkheads anyway, so the added cost of bulkheads with pre-filters and a sheet of open cell foam will only run me 2-3 bucks extra.

I use another aquarium pump with a foam insert that sits in my reservoir and pumps nowhere, it works well cost me about $8

The filter material from the fish store ended up working great. The bulkhead prefilters I mentioned are actually bulkhead screens. They screw onto the inside of the bulkhead assembly and using a couple zip ties I can secure a piece of filter around the screen. They look like tiny air filters.
