Anybody use smaller than 5 gallon buckets?

So I normally use 5 gallon buckets for DWC and RDWC. But I also usually grow pretty decent size plants, so the root mass takes up the full 5 gallons by the time I flower them. I'm wondering if a smaller plant can get away with smaller buckets, and how small? Lately I have been putting seedlings in 3.5" netpots in groups of 3 in 2 gallon buckets to use less nutrient solution and save space. They get their own bucket after true leaves. So naturally, it's got me wondering if it's possible to do a 2 gallon bucket grow?

Check out the grow method used by “The Rev” - breeder of KOS seeds, and author of the book TLO - True Living Organics. He does a pretty intensely managed supersoil based organic grow method, almost exclusively done in small containers, like 2-3 gallon sized. He likes the small containers and runs higher temps, feeding constantly with teas and “spikes”, claiming that it keeps the microbe populations booming. This info is from his 2nd edition book. The third edition is coming out soon and he may have changed his method, but the 2nd book might interest you.

I think he's referring to hydro buckets.

Yeah I only do hydro buckets. DWC. I will probably put some on coir, though. I have more than 6 strains I am growing now, and I only flower 2 plants at a time. That's a great vid, btw. I have had Runtz before. Awesome strain!

They make 3-1/2 gallon buckets, that are shorter than the 5 gals. With the smaller 3-4 inch netpots, they hold a decent amount of solution. I prefer square buckets or totes these days. Better suited for installing larger bulkheads, and easy to get in virtually any size or shape now days. 5 gallon square buckets needed to be special ordered before you could swing by the home stores and pick em up cheap in recent years..

^ Those are the best smaller than 5 gallon buckets I've used, for like 3$ a pail. I guess they quit carrying them in stock though, and now have semi transparent ones at the store that cost 50% more. Have to order a 10 pack, but still cheap.
