Peter MacKay, long-time Harper ally and current Justice Minister, leaving politics: reports

Adrian Wyld / The Canadian Press filesPeter MacKay in the House of Commons. He's expected to announce his resignation Friday afternoon.

Justice Minister Peter MacKay will announce Friday’s he’s stepping down, CBC News reports, citing Conservative sources.

MacKay has served in Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Cabinet since he formed government in 2006, first as minister for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, then in foreign affairs then defence before he became attorney general and minister of justice in 2013.

June 2 will mark the 18th anniversary of MacKay’s election to the House of Commons in the 1997 federal election.

In 2003 he briefly served as leader of the federal Progressive Conservative party before he joined forces with Harper, then leader of the Canadian Alliance, to merge the two parties to create the Conservative Party of Canada.

MacKay was long thought to be a contender to replace Harper when he eventually resigns, but he’s expected to announce he’s not just stepping down but leaving political life.

More to come
