An idea on how to get multiple big colas?

So what if you were lets say to top a plant off... let the 2 tops grow up a bit, then tie the two tops down for some lst training... wouldnt you then have a whole row of main colas that would plump up? Or do the hormones not work like that?

Also, could you do the same thing with having 4 tops, and opening them up and allowing light to penetrate the center of it all?

Thoughts?

This time around I am going to try Uncle Bens topping technique. Using his techniques you should be able to get 2 or 4 colas depending on where you top it.

Hope this helps

Ya I had read that thread but was thinking what if you were to create other main "leader" colas... I drew a half assed diagram to illustrate my idea.

Does my idea seem assanine or will the hormones be distributed properly?

not assinine, they will more or less grow like that, with the exception of a few still taking off a little ahead of the pack and being bigger than the rest.

but just to answer your question, yes, you could theoretically create 20,40, 60 or however many tops your lighting/space/patience would allow.

Most people seem to agree that 3 or 4 main shoots is best, probably just to be practical and not to end up with a bunch of little popcorn nugs

I have done this for years and years. I fim then lst. Results with minimum of 12 top buds!

how long do u wait after u FIM to start tying them down?? i just FIM'd mine 3 or 4days ago and was thinking about tying them down.
I fim at about 6 inches. I train to keep the colas below 24 inches, bear in mind that each cola is usually a foot long. Obviously after fimming I have to wait for the resulting multiple petioles before i can tie them down...

k look at my pics there all around 6-8 inches i just FIM'd them 3-4days ago but made my cut a little to high i cut like 70%of new growth off and their doing good im seeing new growth..would u LST these or give them a couple more days

I would wait till you can tie down each individual new 'stem'. My plants look like a cart wheel from above each 'spoke' has multiple colas. If you tie down yours now the new stems will all be fighting over the same space.

I topped this plant to get 4 tops then trained it about a week later.
The first pic was taken about 3 weeks ago( right before switching the lights) and the second was taken last night.

careful with your nutes, pic 2 is looking a bit like its starting to suffer from slight nute overload.
If anything pic 2 is showing to be more nitrogen deficient than pic 1,as the leaves look to be way more yellow. This has a lot to do with the HPS light being on in the background in pic 2.In the first pic was taken during veg so it was a MH in the background.
The leaves are not really that yellow in pic two.
Note that the carpet looks way different in the 2 pics.

Nitrogrn defiency starts from the bottom and does not make leaf tips turn brown as is shown in the bottom right of pic 2, you also have cupping visible. I know nute overload when i see it, 20 years of growing has helped though...

Bottom leaves do for sure turn yellow FASTER than the rest of the plant, but the rest of the plant yellows as well.and you can tell the difference when put next to another plant that is nitrogen deficient. My plants do not have brown tips and the leaves aren't cupping bro,I see them everyday lol!
The top leaves ARE however a little bleached from my HPS.But I'm sure you being a grower of such caliber you already knew that:clap:
Anyhow,I posted the pics in reference to getting more tops, not nutrient deficiencies ore nutrient burns.
+rep for trying to help though

Sorry to interrupt the thread but does topping and/or fimming apply to Indicas only or can Sativas also benefit from this? I say this because Sativas are usually taller and "slinkier" than the Indicas...Any thoughts?
