All you have to do to get Algae, is add LIGHT and WATER.

You can not grow HYDRO without the WATEr, so prevent the LIGHT from getting in the water.
And use some peroxide in the water. 1 teaspoon of 3% per gallon of water.

is he using organic nutrients? is the resevoir sealed from light? does he use any h202 in the mix?

Thanks roseman!

"blacked out" res' can often not block all light. Put ur "blacked out" plastic up to ur hps light...see a hint of blue or whatever color you painted over? Apart from the light you will definitely need h2o2 since the nutes are chemical. Get hygrozyme if your using organic nutes like flora nova. More than likely if you didnt see this coming your plants are already dead...i mean your friends plants? hahahaha. Sorry, but at least your equipped for next time. Whoever said teaspoon/gal of 3% is messed in the head. U can use the 35% at that rate, so I am sure the 3% will require more to kill off algae.
