AKDaze's Initial Soil Grow -Six Strains

Hello there and welcome to my grow log!

I finally took the time to sit down and get this started. I have been procrastinating for awhile now, many of the plants are now on their 5th set of leaves. But what can you do when you have exams to study for?

Anyway, lets start at the beginning.

Well, after realizing the amount of cash I was spending and the irregular quality of herbs I was receiving, I thought it would be a good time for me to start a grow of my own. So I decided to purchase some seeds online, that was around Oct. 4. I decided on ordering Greenhouse Seed's Hawaiian Snow,
1st prize winner in the 2003 High Times Cannabis cup. I was really excited for this strain but unfortunately I received an email from them, on October 17!, saying that they were out of stock and that I had to choose another strain. So I ordered Greenhouse Seed's Neville's Haze (NH) and White Rhino (WR). Afraid that I still would not get these seeds, I ordered a few other strains, White Widow (WW), AK 47 and Big Bud (BB), from another web site. They even threw in some free seeds, of an unknown stain (UK).

Finally on October 26 I received some seeds!!!! I got the White Rhino, White Widow, AK47, Big Bud and the unknown strain! I was so happy to see that they made it all the way here, fresh from the UK. So, I got started right away and germinated 4 of each seed using the paper towel method. The next day, 3 AK47, 3 WR and 2 BB popped open and had 1/4 inch tap roots. So I soaked up some Jiffy Pellets planted the popped seeds and put them all in a prorogation tray, left in the dark with 80F and 90RH. The next day I did the same with the last AK47 and BBs, 2 WW and 1 UK.

On the 29th I got the NH seeds in the mail and decided to germinate only two of them. I realized that I already had a whole lot of seed started. The next day all of the seeds I had placed in the Jiffy pellets sprouted and I placed them under lights. I bought a couple shop lights at the hardware store with daylight tubes. On Nov 4 one NH sprouted and was put under the lights also.

The Grow Closet

During the whole time I was waiting for my girls to get started. I was busy working on my grow closet. The closet is 2 feet deep x 5 feet wide and 7 feet tall. The first thing I did was spray down the whole closet with Lysol to disinfect everything, just in case. Then, with the help of a friend, we put up some plastic sheeting and then lined the walls with mylar. Then we put in the second door frame I built, you will have to take a look at the picture it's hard to explain. We then split the room into two, flower and veg of course. The flowering chamber makes up the bottom 4 1/2 feet and the veg is the upper portion of the closet. I put in a sliding door to seal off the two areas.

Lighting

In the vegetation room I have two four foot long shop light fixtures. Each fixture has two daylight spectrum fluorescent bulbs. They are held up by a system I rigged up with chains and some line. In the flowering chamber I have a 400 Watt HPS. It is a Hortilux bulb in a LumenAire 6 reflector connected to a 120V Lumatek digital ballast. I also have a few CFLs for supplementary lighting if I need it. The veg and flower lights are connected to separate timers. Veg is on for 18 hours and flower is on for 12.

Ventilation

I have a four inch intake in the bottom of my closet connected to three computer fans, feeding the flowering chamber. There are two four inch ducts pulling air from the flowering to the vegetation chamber. One draws warm air from the top of the room the other draws cool air from near the intake. The veg chamber has a four inch exhaust at the top opposite of the intake. The exhaust air is pulled back down into the flowering area, through my 400 watt HPS light, through a 4 inch Vortex fan that provides the negative pressure. Opposite of the Vortex fan is a homemade carbon filter inside of a box I made to silence the noise of the fan and rushing air. The box is connected to an opening above the second door, where the exhaust air finally escapes. The exhaust also cools down the HPS ballast that is mounted near the exhaust port. All of the air is displaced into my room! The Vortex fan turns off when the lights turn off however all of the computer fans are still running so no air, smell, escapes the closet unfiltered. The computer fans provide enough pressure to push air through the carbon filter.

I hope this makes some sense. I'll post some pictures!

Watering

Right now I am hand watering all of the plants about every three days. However, I am setting up a automatic watering system because I will be going on vacation and have to leave my babies for a couple of weeks and no one will be here to water them. I have ordered most of the parts I need and I am just waiting for them to arrive so I can get it set up. Right now I have all of the reservoirs, pumps, hose, and splitters. All I need now are a few 1/4 inch tees and a float valve! I'll put up a picture of the water reservoir outside the grow closet.

Soil and Nutes

I am using Fox Farm Ocean Forest Soil. The nutes I am using are from Greenhouse Hydroponics' Maxi Grow and Maxi Bloom. I also got a bottle of Super Thrive, I have heard good things about Super Thrive.

The Pictures

First we have a view of the area directly outside the grow room. The black box on the left is the water reservoir, there is close up of it in a later post.

Second, you can see the air exhaust from the room. The noise is dampened using foam!

Third, there is a piece of cardboard in place to direct exhaust air over the ballast! Keeps it really cool!

Last two pictures you can see the bright HPS lighting escaping the closet. When I took the picture the veg lights were also on but they are hidden by the sliding door.

These are pictures of the flowering room!

You can see there on the back wall the air intake connected to a box with three computer fans. The 4 inch duct on top of the box is an air intake for the veg room, drawing air from the computer fan. On the left wall there are hoses and distributors for the future watering system!. Also there are two air lines going through the wall to feed bubble stones in the water reservoir.

The fourth picture is of a computer fan mounted inside of a 4 inch duct drawing warm air from the top of the HPS light and exhausting it into the veg room (one of the veg room intakes).

In the last picture, the hose on the left comes from the top of the veg room. It then connects to the backside of the HPS reflector. The front of the reflector then connects to the Vortex fan, which is connected to the carbon filter above it.

The veg room!

In the first picture you see the opening to the veg room with the sliding door down. You can also see the digital ballast. The air exhaust is behind the piece of cardboard, which directs the air over the ballast, cooling it.

In the second picture you can see the exhaust intake at the top corner of the veg room.

The third picture shows the air intake (flower room exhaust) from the top of the flower room.

The next two show the other intake in the very corner with a computer fan drawing air in from it.

I love it!!!... this is almost exactly what i had in mind for myself ..definatly be watchin...ty for doing your research and giving us something worthwhile to follow

I really like your setup, well thought out and nice and stealthy. Good luck with your grow, I'll be following it.

THANK YOU!!!

Thanks for taking the time to look at my journal!!! And thank you for all of the great comments on my set up!!! I really appreciate it!!!

Soo...

Well we are coming up on Thanksgiving and that means that I'm taking a short vacation! yeah!!! I'll be glad to get a break from college education!!! However, I feel bad about leaving my girls all alone for six days. Well it will actually be four days since a friend of mine will still be around. I'll make sure he gives them a good watering before he leaves.

I feel like my girls are going to be just fine while I'm gone. My closet is working great, the temps are staying anywhere from 77 to 81 degrees while the lights are on. I'm pretty sure they will be fine, but WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?

Here is a little update!

The first tree pictures are of the flowering plants! 2 of 4 of my friends plants turned out to be females. I also started flowering 6 of my biggest plants they were around 8 to 12 inches tall. Right now I can see that 4 of the 6 are female!!! Two white widows and two AK47.

the fourth pictrue

Here are the other 10 plants that I am flowering!

Last picutre

These are a bunch of clones I took before I started flowering my plants.
