Air Stones and Roots

I just recently made my own bubbler... The airstone is the large cylinder type, and it's vertically suspended in the water. My concern is that the top of the air stone is only about 8 inches below the bottom of the net pot... Won't the roots reach farther down, and drown? How much of the roots need to be "bubbled"? Please help as my clones will be rooting any day now! Thanks

The oxygen is dissolved into the water. Although it's ideal to have multiple air stones at the bottom, your roots will not drown in your situation.

Thanks. I have always done soil so this is new to me... What kind of air stone(s) would you recommend? I just got the kind they sell at the hydro shop...

Most of your roots will be swimming in the nute solution/water.
About a third will be suspended in the air, between the bottom of the net pots and the top of the water.
The dissolved oxygen in your water, from the air stones, is what enables them to breathe and live.

What are your plants in ? 5gal bucket, tote, cooler, etc. ?
The more air the better, but not TOO much. Don't want the water popping and bubbling violently.
The spray/mist from the bubbles popping at the surface splashes the roots above the water with nute solution.
The nutes in the water allow the roots that are under water to eat/drink what and when they want.

I am running 2 - 12gal Igloo coolers to test which air stones I like more.
1 cooler has 4 -14inch air stones/sticks from wal-mart (the blue ones).
1 cooler has 4 - 4inch round/column air stones (grey pumace-like stones that stand-up).

I have been trying differant types of air stones and so far the 6 inch blue air stones have worked the best for me,there cheap easy to get and fit in my buckets the best.I run 2 per bucket and they give the best results for me.

I've tried the old blue airstones -- 6 and 12 inches -- but gave them up for the 48 inch flexible wand. Just bend that sucker around and you've got oxygen galore.
Wow, that was my first post. I've been lurking here for two years now. I don't know why I felt the need to reply now...but those wands really do kick ass.

Flo - I'm using a 6 gal black trash can. My air pump is pretty weak (6w), so there aren't any violent bubbles goin down. I'm kinda worried the pump isn't strong enough for the air stone, but at least a decent amount of bubbles come out. I might get a new one, cause the one I got was super cheap, but I really despise wal mart so I think I'll go to the aquarium shop.

lurker (lol) - yeah I lurked for a few months myself and just recently started posting... Would my air pump even work with that air stone? Seems like it'd be way too weak to push air through 48 inches of stone... but the idea is intriguing
