Yes more than one probably if you are using a tote ... Remember you can never have too many bubbles.

just having the hose at the bottom of the tote doesnt create bubbles?

no you need the bubbles to be as small as possible so that theye really get into the water

Yeah get the air stones you can find them anywhere at any pet store, wal mart , aquarium store , grow store, etc... They make the cheap ones or you can buy some really good ones its all about how much you want to spend... I use 3 6 inch air stones in my 5 gall cooler res, in a 2 of them I run 4 .

there are some that will disagree with you. Most of the aeration of water takes place at the surface of the water for the most part, if you look at surface area of the bubbles you can get with a plain old hose compared to a cheap air stone, I would edge that the hose only would create more surface area on the top of the water than a poor quality stone.
Now some of the air hog set ups are very nice and they should be for $60. They create so many bubble, very nice. My 2 ...... JR

If you want to go DWC i would by a dual output air pump i think they say they are for like a 30 gallon or 40 gallon tank. grab two airstones and some tube and your good. mabey around $40-$60
