Live in an apartment and need to know what type of air purifiers work best to kill the dank smell so my neighbours don't think they've touched down in the jungle somewhere

Looking forward to some good word.

An appropriately sized carbon filter with the prefilter will do the job just fine.

Exactly. And it you feel the need for extra reinforcement, a negative ion generator (ionizer) will help as well.
