Hello everyone. I am thinking to switch to LED lights, just have one question and maybe someone can give me the very simple and understandable answer. What is these measurements: μmol/s vs µmol/j ? and whats the difference between them?

Plants use photons to make energy to drive their biological processes.

UMol is a count of the photons.
J = Joules which is an energy unit. j
S = seconds which is a time unit. s
W= Watts which is a power unit ( energy over time) w= j/s

so if a light manufacturer says their light makes 1600 umols/second that's how many photons this fixture can throw per second. But tells us nothing about its efficiency. A more efficient light will throw more photons per watt. This number is uMol/J.

so how do we calculate our umol/J? We divide the lights umol/s by the watts the light uses to get the umol/J.

1600umol/s on a 600W light = 1600/600 = 2.67 umol/J

most HID lighting does round 1.6-1.7 umol/J
Dual end gavita fixtures are around 2.1 umol/J
Lower quality or older LED tech 2.1-2.3 umol/J
Most new high efficiency LED 2.5umol/J- 3.1umol/J

3 times thank you! That was easy to understand!
