600w hps or 1000w hps?

I wanted to get other people's thoughts on this issue. Would you use a 600w hps in a 4'x4' space instead of a 1000w. My thoughts are it would keep heat down compared to the 1000w thus keeping yield up to where the 1000w is suppose to create a higher yield but is harder to maintain temperature. I have a 1000w right now and temps are up around 100. Thinking I should trade in for a 600w, thoughts?

Is it an air cooled hood? 1000w is what the sun provides to 1 sq meter of earth. I would want to make the 1000 work in that space if I could.

yea I have it running with a 450cfm fan, and a cool tube. I can't run an a/c in the area and I live in a very hot environment. its hard and expensive to keep my own house at 85 degrees.

Ouch. I don't think we have hit 80 outside yet this year. Maybe a 600 would be the way to go. Any chance you can get your hands on a loaner 600 or used one from a hydro store to see if it helps enough before committing to ditching your 1000?

yea I think I'm just going to grab a 600w ballast and bulb, and just have them both, couldn't hurt I suppose. must be nice , its already 108 outside here.

One of your heat issues is caused by you cool tube, it holds heat and that's what you want to avoid. Ditch the tube for a gull wing and put the fan as close to the ceiling as you can and vent from there. If you have been growing your plants to be 5 feet tall stay with the 1000w if your only growing them 3 feet get a 600 for sure, 600 will put out more for it's size than a 1000w. don't know what your growing in but, can you run the light at night and freeze up some water bottles and drop one in a bucket of salt water lots of salt, softer salt is fine.

I would just get a 1000 watt dimmable ballast. Be cheaper and would give you more flexablity to control the temps. You will still have the option to use to 1k for the winter. Not to mention less wear on the bulb.

Thanks. On the subject of the cool tube, I have cooler air running through it, I would think it would keep cooler than not having it, right?

This picture doesn't show it but on the intake of the muffler I have a duct running out of the grow space now.

Any thoughts on a evaporative air cooler ? There're cheap, don't pull many watts and will help if your climate is dry. A small window ac is another alternative or a portable AC ( cost more then the other two/check craigs list) but you need to vent it out and they pull some watts when the compresser is on. Sounds to me with the heat your dealing with that dropping light size might not help to much or your hood/tube aint cooling for squat > got passive intake ? :bigjoint:
