6" cooling fan on yieldmaster II ???

Hi all, i'm helping my friend w/ his first grow. it's technically my 2nd grow but might as well call it my first because my 1st was very amauturish & done over 12 years ago on just standard flourescents. Anyway, trying to do it up right & got a 1000watt light goin w/ a yieldmater II reflector. it has a 6" opening on either side to hook up a cooling fan. Well i purchased a cheap fan @ the local mega hardware store for $30 because they wanted $200+ for a 6" fan @ the grow store. my fan is 250 cfm, about 1/2 that of the grow store one but I think it should be adequate, especially since it's in a basement & the fall & winter months are coming. Anyhow the fan is 6" and one side has a ribbed / kinda crimped up looking end that is slightly smaller than the other end. The other 6" compontents sold @ the hardware store are the same & the crimped looking end always fits snugly inside the non crimped end so everything fits nicely. but when i try to put the fan on my reflector the crimped end is just slightly too small to fit OVER the 6" opening & too big to fit inside the reflector opening. And if I try it on the other side, the non crimped end will go over it but it is ridiculously loose. For the time being I have folded up a lenth of tape = to the circumference of the reflector opening & usen enuf to somewhat shim the connection & then used a bunch of HVAC tape to secure the fan to the reflector. But it seems to me that this should fit better/more easily. Am I missing a part or adaptor? why on earth would the reflector be made to not fit perfectly w/ a 6" duct fan? It's certainly something I can deal with & get around, I mean i can make it work, already have. but I have the feeling there is a simple solution & I'm missing something so i'd love to get some advice :)

buy some 6 inch ducting and put the fan away from the lights. thats what thoses 6 inch openings on your air cooled hood are for.
