5 Hours HPS, 11 hours CFL + repp

After transplanting my plants in vegg I decided to use a 250watt HPS for a few hours during there 16 hour light cycle to encourage recovery.
What I noticed is that the plant formed much new growth during this period in contrast to using CFL's/ Fluro so I have continued with this cycle.
What affect do you think this is having on my plants, will it increase the rate of hermie's?
 
I put my plants under yellow spectrum after I water because that just happens to be a good place for them to drain. They always grow like crazy but I thought it was because I just watered them... maybe not?

Sorry I dont have the answer, I guess I may in 8 weeks...
 
In my case anyway, it's most definitely due to the light. This HPS is god.
Anyways does any more experienced grower have much of an idea about the possibility of a hermie infestation due to this schedule.
 
Just use the HPS. More watts=more lumens, plants love lumens.

I wouldn't worry about turning it hermie...you really gotta stress the plant severely for it to do that, unless it's a very intolerant plant. I try to give my plants some stress to encourage stronger growth...if i get any hermies, they'll be slaughtered, i only want strong females for cloning.
 
Longer light cycles makes the plant take longer to sex. I use the 16/8 method as well and have had great success! Most my plants show sex by week 6 of growth.
 
not really, my plants show pre-flowers at 3-4 weeks of veg and then take 1 week(after starting 12/12) to go into full flowering mode.
 
Yeah the only thing preventing me from using the HPS all the time is the heat, dn't have proper ventilation as of yet at it's hot as hell atm.

lol, it wont cause it to hermie, not at all. the plant doesnt get the same intensity light all day in nature.......

Well your doing somrthing right then...lol.

The benefit i see is that my plants at flowering go immediatly into flowering...at week 1 of flowering i can see a heavy production of trichs. There are benefits to both methods...i just prefer this one.

Get some fans in there ASAP!!! make sure your about 10-12" away for now since the heat could possibly damage the plants. If you got no cooling solution atm...then go back to the cfl's untill you fix the heat problem.

It also puts the plant into a repair mode if it's suffering any small damages.

whats your plan to fix the problem(heat)? you'll need to figure out a way to add proper ventilation asap, build a cooltube for the hps and you should see the temps drop alot. what do your temps look like right now? anything over 95 will have negative results usually.

Ya good idea about building your own cooltube...that way you can lower the light as well!

I've got an osculating fan in there atm, and saving up for a inline fan with ducting that will run down to the window. Dn't have the tools to make a cool tube unfortunately. Thx for the advice though.
 
Cool tubes are simple and very easy to make...just need a couple computer fans, and some dryer vent and your pretty much set!

Sounds too easy :P The only method's I've read about are those old school baking tubes and the sheet of glass method, which I would presume would involve glass cutting. Do you have a link to this method by chance?
 
More of a project then a reality...shouldn't be too hard to construct with some large venting you could probably pick up cheap at a hardware store, i few 240mm fans and i think i'd be set to build a home-made cooltube.

In fact i think there is a guide to this somewhere on this site...if i find it i'll post it for you.
