400w CMH in a 2x2x5?

Would a 400w Phillips MasterColor CMH work well in a 2x2x5? If so, do you think I could use a dual bulb reflector and use a 400w HPS + 400w CMH for flower? Overkill for 2x2x5?

if your gonna do cmh theres not realy a good reason to switch to hps for flower imo. 2x2 should work great as long as you have good ventilation.

dual 400 is over kill in a 2x2. that would be better suited for a 3.5 x 3.5 - 4 x 4. cmh is much better than hps imo

the master color has been discontinued. the philips allstart 330 watt cmh is much better. Runs on an 400w mh mag ballast only. Runs cooler than a 250 watt hps /mh. Out performs a 400w hps. It has a higher par rating and lumen per watt rating than a 600w ushio hps. The 330w is 1300 umole/s from 16 inches away and 100 lumens per watt. A 600w ushio is 1100 umole/s at 12 inches away and 97 lumens per watt. The 330 allstart has a quartz crystal coating so its rated to be in an open reflector. No glass. Just bring in cool air from outside and you will be fine. Glass cuts 15% of spectral output. Venting lights too cool to below operating temp cuts spectral output by 10%.

The allstart will cover a 3x3 - 3x4 depnding on wing or reflector or burn position.

hydrofarm told me all their mag ballasts pulls 2-10 watts over what the bulb pulls. I've yet to get a killawatt meter to confirm.

I've just read alot of people like to use CMH along side an HPS or red LED's or uvb. Just trying to figure this out for my next grow, I think I'm definitely going to go with a CMH bulb, read nothing but good about them.

I was under the impression you were still able to get a master color bulb but yeah, I read they won't be making them anymore. the last production run was March 2013 and the site still has them up for sale. But if the 330w all-start is better.... maybe I should be looking at that bulb. Do you have any links you can show me where the 400w mastercolor is compared to the 330w all-start? Also, are you saying I wouldn't need an air-cooled hood for the 330?

Errr, wait that ICmag link is to DNA bulbs.

I'm not sure about the 330, I can't find anything solid about it, only thing I've seen is one guy on IC saying he regrets getting the 330 and the 400 was better for trich production.

i use 400w mh/hps cooltube in my 2x2..
I get massive yeilds.

Best light for the amount of space. 1 Gram per Watt with SoG..

I can only have a 2x2 from lack of space so i made the best out of it

It can run horizontal or vertical. I run them horizontal in wing reflectors. they were the same size as a 400w mh.

The ones on ic rag. Dna 900 w which is really a Philips allstart 860w rebranded. It has the same spectrum as the 330w. It produces way more trichs than Apollo led that produces more trichs than a 1000w digilux, hortilux, and ushio. cmh puts out uv-a And uv-b.

Check kite highs post. 2 330 all starts and a 400w hps.

For a 2x2 I would rather run a Hans led.

I'm running a 400W HPS in a cool tube in a 2x2x4 box and I actually have two of my plants raised up. I know CMH bulbs run a little cooler than HPS bulbs of equal power and you have an extra foot of space but I would strongly suggest you use an air cooled hood or cool tube.

That LED looks really good.. Everytime I think I have what I'm going to do for my next grow figured out, I always find something else. I've gone from deciding on MH/HPS to CMH and now to LED.

I'm defiantly not going to be running MH/HPS, it's just ancient technology by todays standards. They're hot as hell and use alot of power.

Right now it's a toss up between CMH/LED for me. I don't want to use a cool tube because I don't want any glass between bulb and plant. If I go CMH I'll pickup a wing reflector and maybe throw a small 80mm PC fan on it to blow some air on the bulb if it's an issue.

Hell, I'm thinking a combination of CMH/LED right now. Maybe use 2 of those Hans panels for side lighting while using a 330w all start from the top...

That Hans panel will cover a 2x2 1/4 by itself. I would add a couple. Philips warm white led spotlights 19.5w (18w) from home depot. Hans doesn't have any white leds. Those will add to make a full spectrum. .

The prices on these vary. I saw them for $10 less a couple weeks ago at hd.

Or 4 warm white cree leds

Individually they around $15-$17
It didn't show it online
