400hps help

a just purchest my first 400whps light and i got to bulbs with the unit how can i tell the diffrent between the 2 spectrums blue and red ? i think i have been sent 2 of the same bulbs ? both glow orange .:wall:

ps they are both philips son t plus 400w

Ok, I hope your refering to a MH and HPS lights. If you have or are supposed to have a MH and HPS. The MH bulb is very big in the middle and is used for veg. The hps is long and slender. The MH and Hps are the same length but the MH looks like a very pregnant HPS. Hope this helps! The Mh is what gives you more blue and the HPS is for red. looks like it does during a bright sunset.

Red is HPS, and is used for flowering stage. Blue are MH (Metal Halide), and work better for veg. You won't get blue spectrum HPS bulbs, although you can get conversion bulbs that will work in an HPS ballast, and you can also get switchable ballasts that will work with both bulb types.

In realtiy, HPS will work fine for both vegging and flowering, as will MH. If you're on a budget, you don't need both types of light, although using both does have it's advantages.

thanks for the info lads :)

they will just have to suffer the red one for a few week before i can get a mh bulb do i need anythin else to run the mh buld or will it run fine off the hps light that i got at min ??
