400 watt footprint

its best to get a new bulb every year. just make sure you get a bulb that fits your ballast. they have different size modules or whatever in them. most bulbs come with 18k to 24k hour lifespan i think. just check out bulbs over at htg supply or at your local hydro shop. im just getting into indoor growing myself so im not an expert on certain bulbs.

what company made the ballast? and did it come with a cooltube or hood or just a wing reflector.

A 600W can handle 5x5 -barely- in veg, if you don't mind letting the growth slow a bit.. 4x4 is the max you'd take a 600W to at bloom, and a 400W would be 3x3.. you could go further depending on the type, but you may not like what results, and you would certainly not get what you'd expect yield-wise out of it.

Last I remember the Viavolt @ Home Depot is a T5 setup, and it has electronic ballast.

Na. They have HPS too...I think a 250w as well. I saw the T5's when I was looking for mine but went with a sunblaze. I just stumbled on this hps for a good price and an honest seller. Been using T5's for a while.

Nice, good to hear :D

Can someone recommend a good bulb? Im still not sure if its a digital or magnetic ballast. Home depots website jus says its a screw in terminal and i Cant locate via volt online for a manual.

Ballast type factors into a few other things, as long as you know it's set for HPS then it has the ignitor circuit it in, and any HPS bulb will work... some better than others depending on what you want to spend.

Can someone recommend a brand? Ive seen them from 20-100 dollars a piece...is there a big difference?

There is, based on spectrum, and PAR/lumen output, etc. Hortilux is considered one of, if not the best in the industry.. but they like to price gouge in some aspects so you'll see their bulbs around the 75ish (or higher) range. Many other options, like Ushio - the Ushio 400w HPS is pretty nice and can run from 50-60.
