I hear the flowering coverage for a 315 is a 3x3 . So if I wanted veg only in a 4x8 tray would 2 315w CMH lights be ok?

It'll work. Heat might suck. But it'll work. Be a lot cheaper to grab a couple t5s though probably

It will work great. No matter which bulb you use the 315cmh is a good choice for veg. It out performs 400mh bulb in same space and obviously far better internode spacing than any HPS.
I used to use one in a 4x4.

I've never used cmh. What's the heat difference like?

I have never used t5 or t8, but watts are watts so same wattage should be comparable heat provided air temps are taken properly.
They are a nice light though, come down in price a lot recently. The spectrum is pretty amazing.
The bulb I was using was the higher K for flowering, but its such a full spectrum that it performs really well in veg.
Only downside to single 315s is the small foot print for flowering.

Other downside I noticed was it grows leafier plants than my hps and then doesn’t have enough power to penetrate the canopy like the 600 does.
I got much looser fluffier lowers than I am used too. Cost about 30% yield compared to Hortilux 600 hps.
About the same heat to the canopy my air cooled 600 as an open 315 in a vertical reflector.

I use a 630 which is just 2X315, I can adjust it to 280,420,630,700. I love it. I have the same 6 by 6 Feet area using 630 as when I had a 1000MH. I only use it for veg though.
