315 cmh 5x5 tent

Im planning on getting 2 315 cmh lights to use in my 5x5 tent. Ill only be using 4x4 of the tent so would 1 light be enough to veg a 4 plant scrog? I would put the second light in during flower. Any input is appreciated.

1 light for veg will be plenty, keep them up like 30-36" above canopy and they'll cover the 4x4 veg area no problem.

I am in the same boat as you, Chronnie. Well, I've a 6.5x6.5, so nearly the same. I was going to get two of the 630ws, but now I'm wondering if that's going to be overkilling it!

In your config I'd go 4x 315's for perfect coverage of that area in flower. When you run multiple units you get some overlap from each and they can cover off 6.5x6.5' with 4x 315's no problem and better spread than 2x 630's.

Ok I see what you are saying! Given my height restrictions, would it be wise for me to invest in the air-cooled versions? I'm able to handle the heat from a 1000w HPS just fine, though in the summer it does push my cheap-ol' 150$ AC unit's limitations. And am using an 8" 900cfm inline fan for exhaust, intake is a little 300cfm inline fan, if that helps at all :)

Cheers, I haven't looked around recently but I've seen some air cooled hoods for them. I'd grab them to have that option if you need them. Some extra cost up-front but more flexibility. You have a good setup for extraction, should be fine other than possibly through summer. The only downside with multiple units is multiple ballasts so a little more overhead on your total draw. Running 220v it's about 35w/ballast, not huge but adds heat x4.

One more question, if that's alright! The only two air cooled versions I can find are the Sun System model and Phantom model. The Phantom model is significantly cheaper, but their AC version doesn't seem to have a seperate chamber for cooling, although it says it has a 'double wall' feauture. I've heard that cooling will tamper with the spectrum because it affects the temperature to greatly. Would it be better to just bite the bullet and get the Sun System (as theirs has a chamber seperate from the bulb that the air runs through)? Or is it really not enough of a change in spectrum to stress over? Thanks I hate asking a million questions!
P.S. I've seen AC DE CMH fixtures, but they are so much cheaper that I feel like SOMETHING must be a draw back.

Haven't tried the Phantoms but can't go wrong with Sun Systems, their hoods are built well and awesome reflectors.

Most run the 315w open, no air cooling or glass.
Vertical bulb reflectors are probably superior to most horizontal bulb units.
But, verticals are taller in size, and more expensive.
I like having the ballast separate, not internal. That way I can mount it in or out of the grow space. Easier to troubleshoot/replace.

I have 2 of these over a 4x4. Can always upgrade the reflector down the road.
Reflectors only get warm to the touch, never hot. bongsmilie

Regardless of light technology, heat will be produced. Gear up to manage cooling.

So, from what I've gathered, I'm going to mix it up a little with CMH and COB LEDs. Yes Tint Eastwood, I think I would prefer a seperate ballast simply because of heat inside and added weight to the roof of my tent. I can always reinforce, but who really wants a pole everywhere they turn in their grow? Lol. What kind of ventilation do you have if I may ask, Eastwood? I'm going to try to get a take on everyone's experiences in terms of heat and watts needed, so you guys are helping a ton!

Garage based 4x8x8 with 6k window shaker ac. 4x4 grow.
I used rigid foam to build a box, and skeleton. I wanted the option to seal it for Co2.



Half the space is just for all the damn environmental support gear.

Are you using an inline fan to extract air? I love your setup, it is actually the exact same thing that I want to do! To give a really nice combination of LECs and COBs just for that nice boost of red spectrum.
