300 watt CFL'S

Hey folks,

Ive been looking recently at what CFL's are available out there, and thinking off getting the following to use as my main light (i have one 125 watt dual spec cfl, and two 45 watts one blue one red)

Im growing four plants at the moment (first time grow) which are in veg stage and doing ok, but i know ill need some more light for flowering.

hi guys just thought i would mention this for the uk growers
theres 300 watt cfls turning up on flea bay now and they are not what they say they are it seems that they only kick out 135 watts its like all cheap things in life the makers lie or bend the truth about output ( fans are another classic case of this allways buy more than you need if using a budget make )

now these new 300 watters are shorter than a 200 w and still 8 tubes in the uk the 250watt is still the biggest we have thats correct and buy a good make if you want it to do what it says it does

from what ive read the usa have true 300 w cfls but they have 10 tubes and not for sale here yet

like most things in life if its cheap and sounds to good it usually is! do your research before you buy is best it saves you buying twice as most of us have found out in the past !

Just wondering if the one i have linked above looks ok and is the real deal sort of thing. The ebay advertisement doesnt mention the brand i dont think but the companies proper website says there CFL's are Envirolites.

i would go with more cfls than a couple "big" ones. get some wyes and spread the light to each bud site. move them daily or as need be...cfls will produce as long as you can get the light close up as it diminishes quickly

Agreed, the big overhead CFL's are a waste of space. Get more of those 45's and come up with a way to position them around the plants, you need like 100W per plant plus whatever you have overhead.

But if you're willing to get this big hot 300W CFL, why not look into a 250W HPS?

If your gonna go with your bigger wattage CFL I'd suggest super cropping or LSTing or SOG and keep your light as close to canopy as you can without burning. I have a 200watt and a 160watt up top and then I also have a few on one side for my lower flowering plants.

Pick up a light meter that measures foot candles and measure how much your girls are getting. 1000 + is good anything higher is better

Cheers for the replies,

I was thinking about a hps but dont have anyway to vent to heat so was worried about issues with that, seen a decent looking 400watt hps kit for £70 same price as the 300 watt cfl kit. But for the size of my grow area( cuboard), which is about 80 cm lenght and 50 cm wide with plenty height, i thought it might get to hot in there with a hps. Was also thinking off prices costs off running these from what i gather CFL's are alot cheaper to run than hps light?

The set up im thinking off going for is pretty much what's been mentioned, but using the 300 watt cfl as the top source of light, and my other cfls postioned at sides ect where needed.

Does that eBay CFL look ok then yeah? Quality wise.
