So got a new plant today from a dispensary and chopped the top off it (see journal) cuz it was too stretchy/tall. Took the top as a clone, but the only rooting hormone i have is 3 year old Clonex gel. I poured some out into the cap and it is still the right color and consistency, tho maybe a little less gel and more liquid then it once was. I used it for the clone, but it left me wondering, is the rooting hormone expired? is it helping or hurting at this point?

it has a expiration i use roottech cloning gel havnt found anything better and ive used several hormones. a lil dab will do ya.

i have used it when its around this age without any issues
as long as its still thick and purple

it turns runny and goes black with age or exposure to air for too long

ya the color is the same purple, it isnt clinging to the stem as well as it does new, but i hope it still helps.

Just found my bottle of Clonex has turned completely watery, no gel to it at all, and it's less than a year old (least that's when I bought it). There's no expiration date on it so who knows how old it was when they sold it to me. But I've read that other brands last much longer without such problems, so looks like that'll be the last bottle of Clonex I ever buy :cuss::wall::o

just toss it. Go pick up an aloe Vera plant dip the cuttings in the aloe gel in the leaf. Aloe works better than any rooting hormone.
Really? Got a link or some info to back this up? I got an out of control aloe plant in the corner of my porch...

What did it cost you? You've had it for 3 years...is it worth spending the $5 or so to just get a new one and not worry about it? I'm not sure about rooting hormones..are they synth or organically derived? I almost never pay attention to dates on nutes..unless they are organic. As long as most synth. nutes are stored in a cool place out of direct light they will last almost indefinably. Watch for clouding/precipitation of minerals to know if it's going bad. I had a brand new GH 3 part in quarts( grow, micro, bloom) i left in my trunk for a couple weeks last summer. By the time i found it it was completely cloudy and you could see the minerals that had fallen out of suspension...About $60 bucks in the trash...

I've been using aloe for years and so has everyone else in the organic section. I recently switched to aero cloner though. I like that more. No dealing with a dome and stagnant water.

I still use aloe for foliars and tea's. Also when I take cuttings. I soak them in aloe / water solution for a day before throwing them in the cloner. The salicylic acid in aloe does wonders

check out the sticky thread recycled organic living soil no till in the organic section.

I posted a chary somewhere showing all the beneficial for aloe a while ago.
