This is wrong.....pushing 400watts into a 250w bulb is asking for a catastrophic failure/think "explosion".....you can run a 400w mh bulb in a 250w ballast basically dimming it.....but running any hid bulb under it's initial arc wattage requirement fucks up it's longevity and causes a color shift......just buy an appropriate bulb for your ballast....

Cant be buddy. Been doing this for years. You cant push 400W in to a 250W bulb as the lamp will only take the 250W it needs.

^^^^consider yourself VERY lucky..........Yes the bulb will only accept 250w BUT the ignitor is pushing 400w into the system regardless at start up(magnetic ballast) and some will be absorbed buy the capacitor and strains the rest of the wiring(will get hot).....THIS is very dangerous.....running a 400w bulb in a 250w ballast is also NOT recommended by me....but is safer and will not always fire the bulb properly due to it's design.....In the end just use the appropriate bulbs for the ballasts, you can buy them cheap at a big box hardware store. No reason to start "modding" an already unstable tech IMO....do what you wish, but be carefull

I always used the appropriate bulbs for my ballasts.....safety first

Just to add to whats been said here, because you can under-drive safely it is suggested not to: because under-driving can effect the spectrum output of your bulb by never reaching the intended temperature.
