They drown rather quickly, the gum makes them starve to death slowly, doesn't sound more humane to me. I use spring traps to catch them and then finish them off quickly. I don't like gophers, as I said, and I won't hesitate to kill them if they are causing me trouble, but I also don't like to cause undue suffering.
