1st Grow, Indoor, CFL

Ok well, I would say finally got everything together etc etc, but to be honest I rushed into this. But before I go on, a summery for those who can't be assed reading ahead:

Plant age: 1 at 20 days from seed, 4 at 15 days from seed
Strain: Bagseed
CFL
1 plant in bubbler, 4 in soil
Currently in PC, will be moving most.
Have a basic CO2 system in place for PC only...don't think it will do much!

About 3 weeks ago I decided to think about growing, about a fortnight ago I germinated my first seeds, planted them a day later, and then about three days after that I germinated another few because I figured I'd pretty much screwed the first batch (turns out I was right, only one of them left.

Decided to start a journal because I kinda hoped that at least this way, if I screw up in some new and interesting way, it might actually help someone else...and if not well, as good a place as any to come for some help and keep track of things.

On to the plants.

Just bagseed here, not going to order any seeds until I have proven to myself I can do this and get at least enough product to cover personal use (generally pick up a half oz every 2-3 weeks for my girlfriend and I) etc. Any comments on yeild would be great, but I have read enough to know I can probably get more than 1oz/month from what will be the combination of a wardrobe sized space and a small (90cm x 90cm x 50cm) box for mothers and clones. Please stop me now if I'm wrong :)

Counting the date from seed, I have one at 20 days and 5 at 15 days. The one in the largest pot is the oldie, had some light burn (I think it's light burn, not heat burn) but seems to be bouncing back. The Gatorade container one is a makeshift bubbler...jiffy pellet, plastic cup melted with soldering iron, some perlite and an air-stone. The other 3 are just in soil, 2 with jiffy pellets one without.

Case is, maybe not the most basic first grow I've seen, pretty sparse. Going to be using the mother/clone box to flower this lot I think, but still thinking of going back and re-doing a PC grow for fun, with a better hydro, LST or scrog maybe, so I kinda wanted to get a feel for it. At the top is the light, power board and all the excess cable. on the back wall is a cheap thermometer which is soon to be replaced by a cheap all in one weather station thing (ie something that can tell me a little more than 'Feels kinda hot to me'). Walls are lined with the reflective sheeting from a car windshield guard, and on top is a mini yeast-based CO2 factory. Not actually sure how much that will do, but it pipes down into the plastic cup on the far right and bubbles do seem to be coming out...slowly. Just started the culture, so it may pick up a bit, but we will see.

Some pictures below for you all, most of them are from about an hour ago, but there are one or to where i just thought i would how how I started, which might account for some of the stretching I have.

Also after reading quite a few grow journals I get the feeling my plants are a little small for their age. Any ideas as to why would be appreciated. My own suspicions are a) bagseed, crap genetics (it was good smoke, but no-one seems to keep track of what strain they are selling round here, so for all I know it grows slow to start) b) old seeds, i.e. I put them away from about 3 dealers ago, or maybe 18 months, and c) as you can see from some of the pics, they were under crap lights for a while, and I only moved them to the PC 2 days ago, since which they seem to be doing a lot better.

So that's it for now, comments, suggestions etc welcome, just bear in mind, a bigger space is coming, and along with it come more lights, vents, control etc.

Woo first update! It's just compelling to check on them all the time, hard to resist but I must:

So i transplanted one of the more promising jiffy pellets into a new bubbler res that has space for 2 plants. The ones in there now will stay in the PC for life, although i do think I need a bigger rez..probably about twice that high, for them to grow a bit away from the airstone. Clearing the Gatorade bucket out has made things look a lot neater, but it is VERY apparent that i need to do something about the light...pronto! It just isn't reaching that back bottom corner of the case :( All the other plants should be moved out by Sunday night...just hope I don't run out of space or I'm going to have to pull out the old cardboard monster
IMAG0323.jpg

Gunna give the new swimmer a bit of time to adjust, then take all the power cabeling out of the top of the case and put it ON TOP of the case. Stealth, as I said, isn't an issue here, but space is. Besides, any one who walks into my room will pretty much just think it is another mess of cables, common enough round here (have a look at a power board in the corner....I don't actually recall what 10 things needed to be plugged in so bad I used a server room power board, but at the same time they might be important...best not to touch ;))IMAG0324.jpg

As for the CO2...better than pooring a little vinegar over bi-carb every now and then, but it doesn't seem to have the legs to push its own way down. All I have been doing is squeezing the bottle a couple of times every time I close the case. Have checked, and a few good squeeses (vacuum pressure pulls the bottle in...when it can no longer let the water in the tube run back down and stop) can be done every 15-20 mins. Don't know what that means in PPM, growth, etc, but based on candles burning in cups (to tired to go into the test I did, but chill, I will if anyone asks)

your lights are too far away from the tops of the plants. Thats why your stems are so weak that they cant stand on their own. A fan will also help with this issue. Other then that, your setup looks great

Agreed, CFL's won't give off much heat, just prop those bad girls up with some books and get a fan running on it constantly.

For your light placement... get a Y adapter from home depot and another CFL bulb and reposition the fixture somehow so you can have a light pointing toward each corner. Just by looking at your pic, try mounting the light fixture from the outside pointing inward.

What kind of lights are you using right now? All 5500-6500k? See if you cant get some 2700 in the mix. But definitely keep the accent on 5500-6500. Make sure every plant gets some of that higher full spectrum lighting during vegging.

Your set up is very much like mine, I did bag seed as well just to figure out the right soil and nute set-up. Are you going to use nutes in your bubbler? Or simply use it for watering?

Also have you looked into compost teas?

Hey guys, quick update. Just got back from house sitting so no photos until I can recover from that. Also had to leave the seedlings alone for a week...felt bad but there are only 5 and I had my reasons :)

Still, to my surprise, only 1 dead...another is on the edge but 3/5 healthy (even thriving), from a week of neglect...these are plants I may actually be able to grow!

Ok, so I settled back in, smoked a few cones and decided it was time to take some photos!

Decent update, I did some things before I left, and then a bit more when I got back. Watered the plants heavily (slightly over if anything) before I left, but other than that, they got watered about 12 hours ago for the first time in 6 days.

Have started the oldest plant on LST, early I know, but I want to keep it small...bondage photos included :) put in a dual plant bubbler before I left and moved one plant from soil to that...had poor results but we will see if they can be saved...ph in the water was up to 8 and the res was small, changed it for a bigger one and the surviving plant has perked up a bit, but I'm not hoping for much :S

I also set up a webcam in there that is doing some time-lapse video...it isn't great, but it was all I had sitting around and it is kinda cool to watch 7+ hours of movement in 5 seconds. Videos will start to come up in the next week or two, going to move the plants into a new case (last pics) as soon as I come back from a small shopping trip (pots, lights, light proofing and some more tape)

New Home!!

As I said, the last pics are of the new home. Space for 10 bulbs at up to 25w each, a bit low but it's a small grow. Have 5 17w 2700k bulbs in at the moment, getting 5 26w 6500k to fill her up for veg, then switching to 10 x 23w 2700k for flowering. Will also be adding a webcam, a small desk fan, intake and out take, and a cover for the front to keep in/out light. Intake and out take should be fine with 2x 80mm fans out and 1x 80mm in, running of a mains adapter (12v 200ma). asuming we have girls (fingers crossed for 1/3, but...just fingers crossed), they will stay in there through flowering, using a combination LST/SCROG. After some more reading, I'm looking for about 2oz dried in 10-14 weeks, any more is bonus. Anyway, on to the pics and off to the shopping!

1st pic is out of order, but it is my fav :)

Back from shopping, some progress...

Have one plant in the new box in a big pot, not enough 6500k's yet but should be by tomorrow. tempted to move the one from the pc case for now and put everything in there, but they will be so far away..ill see. anywho, a couple more pics :)
IMAG0374.jpgIMAG0376.jpgIMAG0375.jpg

The one that is lst-ing will be repotted wednesday, and the other solo cup...tomorrow? Or the next couple of days. To get a bit more time out of the cup I'm putting it in another cup with perlite in the bottom so the roots can grow down.

Will update again if i move things around, for now, any thoughts on the red stems on the pics up above (first pic on the last post shows it a bit)?

Quick update, have put the one in the moving box closer to the light...it's getting big :) (or am i just getting too excited?) Anyway, this one is going to be topped on Wednesday or Thursday, and then a week or two and I'll start flowering...assuming I can get the box light-tight by then...

Also, no pics of it yet, but my little brother was round and found a seed i had forgotten about in a Jiffy pellet...was sitting in a cup on the floor, destined for a cabinet that hasn't been built yet...18cm stem growing up, super stretch! Replanted it into a cup, still not big enough, but I don't have any money for anything else at the moment....sadface!

anyway, some quick pictures to spice it up :)
