14/10 (on / off) instead of 12/12 for flowering?

I've seen so many dumb threads in this section that belong in newbie section so I guess nobody will mind if I post this here.

Anyway, my question is why 12/12? Who came up with this?

I've been thinking how it isn't really the switch from 18/6 to 12/12 and the much lower amount of light that causes flowering, but the fact that the plant is sensing a constant decrease in the amount of light each day.

Anyone know how strong is the light from 5-9AM where there is no direct light hitting the plants?
If you think about how it is in nature, plants outdoors are flowering right now, and they get at least 14 hours of light each day. (at least mine are)
This amount decreases little by little as we get closer to winter.

So, I was wondering if 14/10 would give better yields / better bud. Perhaps we could slowly lower it from 18/6 to 14/10 and then to 12/12 and see at which point it triggers flowering.

However, I read an experiment that 15/9 in flowering resulted seemed to be the limit before the plant would revert to veg or stay in veg resulting in slowed growth.

yes flowering hormones begin at 15 hours of light. but all that is doing is slowing the flowering responce down. a quick light changes makes stress and this induces a faster flowering set to show. yes more light in theory will grow more but itsa slower to make the buds so its no bennefit..

oh yea that may be true.. my outdoor plants are all flowering at diff times..

but... don't outdoor grows always blow indoor grows away? and I don't think you can ever get only 12 hours of light outdoors unless you're near the poles or something.

Actually I remember it becoming pitch black at 5 pm (which is 12/12 outdoors) but I can't remember which months, probably Nov/Dec... but plants are already done flowering by that time.

no we dont get true 12/12 outdoor in the right time of year...for me here its not till oct or nov..cant be outdoor here than. just go by sun rise and set...not all the twighluight info or others there is.
outdoor can be beter...if you are there every dayt to care for them as we do inside., other than that..no they are weeker and not as dense usualy.,,,may be taller but not tight buds as indoor does with better attention and a controlled environment
